I just can't seem to get a fullscreen picture.  I get letterboxing on all 4 sides.  I'm using MAME .87 and MaLa as my front end.  I need to work this out!

Thanks!

Have you tried the 'aspect' setting?  I'm not sure if it's in your older version of MAME, but in recent versions you can tell MAME what aspect ratio monitor you have.

I tried changing the aspect from 4:3 to 5:4 in the mame.ini file and it had no effect.  I also tried changing the resolution from "auto" to 1280x1024 and the picture got worse (squished like crazy).

You need to reverse the numbers because you have the monitor vertical instead of horizontal.  The short side as now at the top instead of the long side.  That is why your image squished when you set the resolution.

Thanks Kaytrim - I already thought of that and tried a 4:5 setting as well as a 1024x1280 setting.  No dice.  Any other ideas?

This is my MAME ini file:  I've messed around with resolution and screen_aspect and no luck.

Javeryh...

Are you still trying to get the onboard intel card to work? If so.... seriously, just nix it. Every machine I've tried to use with an onboard intel card will not display properly. You could PM UncleT, I think he had some luck with his onboard intel card.

If your not using an onboard intel card.... I don't know what to say.  ;D

Oh yeah... I forgot about that.  I kind of gave up on the setup a few months back thinking that I'll worry about it when the cab is done... well the cab is done.  I'd really like to get this thing working somehow andI'm not afraid to spend a little money to do so.   ;D

Can I upgrade my computer with a video card that would work?  It's kind of an old computer (new in 2000).  I'm stuck with this monitor as I built the entire cab around it - I'd be willing to upgrade though is someone could point me in the right direction.

I've been able to do it, with an intel onbound.  Haven't used 0.87 in a long time, though.

With the screen rotated vertical and the desktop rotated to match, I had

Code: [Select]
switchres               0
keepaspect              1
screen_aspect           4:5

and the ror, rol, and other rotate options at default.  When I had the screen_aspect the 5:4 way, it was very wrong.  You get small black bars on the sides.

If you're talking about vertical games on a normal 5:4 screen, same as above except just switch the screen_aspect to 5:4.

Cool - I can't wait to try this when I get home... one question - how do you rotate the desktop?  I'm assuming you have Windows and everything on your computer running vertically (at 4:5).  This would mean that I should set "ror" and "rol" to "0" because MAME will be vertical by default, right?  This would be great if it works.  Thanks!

Use iRotate, if your card supports it, to have Windows running vertically. It's what I use on my cab.

iRotate doesn't work with the Intel onboard video chips.

Looks like a new video card and some more RAM is the only way to get this thing to do what I want it to do...

According to the support forums, iRotate works with "-Intel Extreme Graphics and newer",
can't hurt to try it anyway.

On my work computer with Intel 82915G Express onboard chip, I can rotate with the driver.  One way to get where I need to go is: control panel, display, settings, advanced, intel graphics media accelerator driver, graphics properties, display setting, enable rotate.     Aren't GUIs the best?  ::) ;)

And yes, ror etc are set to 0.

With the older chipset that you have I am not surprised that you don't' have the rotate feature.  I couldn't do it on Dad's Bartop even with updated drivers from Intel.

yeah, that was my last ditch effort - looks like I'm in the market for a new computer.  Do you think I should order parts for my existing one or just try and get a $300 compaq or maybe order a new motherboard, video card and some RAM and cobble one together using my old case, DVD-ROM and hard drive??

This is still good for what you want.  Just add ram and a video card and you will still be cheaper than buying a new computer.  Or you could just add some ram and it will be good for a horizontal profile MAME machine.  Another option is to check out creigslist for a newer computer in your area.
