Two New Marquees...
« on: June 29, 2007, 11:31:45 am »
I just ordered the following marquees from mamemarquees.com.  The multipede is a slightly modified version of the one on this board somewhere...it initially was pretty low res but has been resized and it actually looks acceptable...I am hoping it comes out in print well enough.  I will be using it on the Centipede cabinet I recently acquired (as a Caliber .50 beater)...I plan on running a 60-in-1 board in it which covers Centipede & Multipede...plus others (yes,  I am making a custom CPO eventually.  I plan on putting the stick in a mushroom inside the "burst" on the original CPO (but moved over a little).

The 2nd marquee is something I put together for the Vs Unisystem I have.  I plan on running a 1000-in-1 in it which has about 15 Vs games ...of course with a custom menu of the Vs games only (plus other menus of course).  I took the grid pattern from the CPO and put something together.  It was quick,  simple,  and to the point.

Glad to see that the resizing software I referenced worked for ya.

Let us know how the mamemarquees printout turns out.

I'm still trying to figure out your fascination with the all in one boards. you could get set up a goodwill pc with a preconfigured dos mame boot disk for WAY less fundage.

I'm still trying to figure out your fascination with the all in one boards. you could get set up a goodwill pc with a preconfigured dos mame boot disk for WAY less fundage.

I can pick up a 48-in-1 board for MUCH less than the cheapest PC...it's plug and play...and only takes about 20-25 seconds to load up to the menu.  Simple.  Works well.

I can pick up a 1000-in-1 board for MUCH less than the cheapest PC and it's essentially a MAME rig built right in...no messing around with front ends...no trying to explain to your friends how the thing works...it is simplicity at it's finest.

Each of my cabinets are unique in how they play....I have a horizontal MAME cabinet with 8-way Comps + trackball + spinner...does just about everything I want it do.  I have a vertical MAME cabinet the same way.  My Double Donkey Kong+ uses Nintendo 4-way sticks...which have a unique feel to them... DK's all play as they were supposed to...and 2-way games play kick ass as well.   My vertical MAME cabinet does not have a trackball in it so this Centipede cabinet will allow me to play Centipede & Millipede as they are supposed to be played...2.25" trackball and only 25-seconds away.   The VS. Cade will retain all the Nintendo 8-way sticks...also a unique feel and will hopefully default to the VS. custom menu.  My cocktail cabinet,  while MAMEd is also a JUKE and is used primarily as a juke...

I find that I enjoy building/fixing/modifying cabinets more than I enjoy playing them...

While some games are duplicated in each cabinet,  they all have a unique "feel" to their gameplay depending on the stick/controller/etc used in each.

I dunno when it happened...but my wife laughs at me because I am always "fixing" something which usually involves me breaking something first in order to fix it.  Or I "fix" something that isn't broke...and break it in the process requiring me to re-fix it all over again...ahhh!!! It's a mean cycle...

So these things run what, like $25-$50 bucks?

Because that's what Shardian is talking about when he speaks of a Goodwill PC.  If they're that cheap, where do I sign up?

48-in-1's can be had for around $190-$200 (cheaper if you are willing to import yourself),  60-in-1's are at about $280 or so...same deal,  import yourself and save dough (but spend it on shipping instead).

Please tell me where I can pick up a $50 PC,  an encoder,  an Arcade VGA card (to run a Standard Res Monitor),  enough memory,  etc. for $200 (I get em for less than $200 but lets use this amount).  An ArcadeVGA card is going to cost you $70,  a JPAC or IPAC is going to cost you some dough, etc.

These boards are plug and play.  No need to mess with an encoder.  No need to buy a specialized video card,  etc.   Plus my price for em is closer to $150 than $200.   Hard to beat.

It's easy for me to pickup a PC (which is all you said) for $50 or less that will run everything the 60-n-1's will. You don't need much storage or memory to run those older games. Even the newer ones aren't bad.

I think $150-$200 is a good price too, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are WAY cheaper than a used PC. Using them for ease of use, installation and reliability is a valid point, but I don't think from a price point it has much merit.

 :dunno

Lastly, I would have a hard time paying someone who is profiting off of MAME (if they are indeed profiting from MAME).

Simple comparison

Comparison of MAME on Goodwill Computer VRS All in One board
PC       $50
AVGA       $90
Interface   $35 (Jpac 60)
W98      $10
PC Misc Parts   $20
Frontend   Free
Mame      Free
Misc Shipping   $25
Obtain roms and setup by user.
Total      $240 (290)

48 in 1      $200
Programmed and ready to go.

If you have a jamma cab then there is no contest because the interface becomes a jpac at more cost.

It all depends on how easy or difficult you decide to make it.

Back on topic.  I really like the multipede marquee.  Hope it turns out.

Bob....

You know you can't accurately put up a price sheet for the PC side of things. Because it's different for every box. First off, my boxes would come with an OEM OS on it. Linux is also an option. I would use a standard computer monitor and my last 17 and 19" were free.

Don't forget the biggest cost of using the 48 in 1 - your soul.  ;D

I agree with the variable cost.  I get alot of PCs free when I help out and upgrade someones PC or build one out of leftover parts.  All I am trying to point out is that the price can easily be comparable.  Video cards, and interfaces with shipping charges can take up a good proportion of a couple hundred dollars.  Sure you can get a free PC but you still need the other bits.   The time novice spends on a front end and gathering roms and other bits did not have a dollar value assigned.  To some it is a labour of pure joy and yet to others it is a bother.  If you want a quick cab for a specific reason the all in one boards are a solution to some people who don't want to mess around.

If however you like to mess around then that is why we are here @ BYOAC

PS I think I already sold my soul for my ROM set or at least put it in supreme jeapordy. To some using a PC monitor is like selling your soul.  I like em because they are cheap and easy.  Sounds like a description of a hooker.

Back to marquees.   Sorry FF this seems to being going astray.
