T-Molding in Australia ?
« on: April 21, 2003, 07:47:49 pm »
Anyone picked up T-MOLDING (or an equivalent thing) here in Australia. If so what sizes did it come in, and where from ?

I don't want to get my MDF until I am settled on a source for T-MOLDING.

If I end up getting it from the U.S, then I will go with 16mm MDF, as 5/8" (T-MOLDING) is as close to 16mm as you can get. However 3/4" is approx 19mm, and I haven't seen 19mm MDF anywhere (or should I just not be worried about a mil of MDF showing.

My dad reckons he saw it in a Clark's mega store up in Newcastle but this is not confirmed yet.

Cheers

Joe

Hi Joe,

We are definitely the poor cousins of Home Arcading here in Australia and it is a very difficult task trying to find items like t-moulding in the required sizes and colours.

Firstly I suggest that try a company called Consolidated Edgings. Their website is at www.consolidated-edgings.com.au and they MAY be able to help with 16mm t-moulding. They often have clearance stock so you might get lucky.

Your best bet would be to grab out the Yellow Pages and look for local Cabinet Makers and Cabinet Makers Supplies. Stick to the larger companies as they are more likely to have more variety.

Don't be surprised if Suppliers try to sell you a full roll (usually 100m or 150m!) as many insist this is the only way you can buy the stuff, whereas the actual Cabinet Makers would probably be happy to sell you however much you need for around $2 to $3 per metre.

Also, if you want a colour other than black you can pretty much forget it.

Your only other option would be to become friendly with some of the US based BYOAC regulars and see if they would be prepared to ship you some if you sent them the $$ to do so.

Feel free to drop me a line if you need to know anything else as I'd be happy to help you!

Cheers,
ChrisW

Werd. I'm Melburn based and have been driving myself bananas trying to find materials for my restoration. Currently I'm looking to re-surface the imitation wood on my table top machine... I don't want to go the Laminate path as I would have difficulty cutting all the speaker slots & such so I figure I'll use self adhesive vinyl, similar to that seen on ANY television produced in the 70's. Forget it. I can barely find the Contact equivalent (with no thanks to the mole at Bunnings), which just won't do. Punch in woodgrain +vinyl in Google however... and you will be presented with a site offering this exact product by the metre for this exact application! Check the 'pages from Australia' radio button and you get, that's right... bugger all.

I have been reduced to scavenging the damn stuff from TV's I find along side the road. As far as t-moulding goes I am seriously considering going back to my high school to say hello to my old principal. Every single table had it... we used to pick it out & off to irritate the teachers. If only I had used my powers for good not evil, or at least taken it some of it home!
