Difference between tube & flat screen tv?
« on: June 18, 2007, 02:01:43 pm »
I'm planning to put a 24" tv in my Dynamo cab(street fighter)...There are two tv's in  Walmart that i'm not sure of...One is an RCA(tube) & the other is a Phillips(flat)...The Phillips is $157 & the RCA is $179...They both do component...I've read some post that they prefer tubes...why?  Also has anyone here bought tv's from walmart? Do they usually last? Oh, I'll be connecting this with my mod xbox...

One more question, like i said i have a Dynamo cab, i want to remove the non working monitor but cant open the back of the arcade...I've been trying to look for some kind of lock but no luck...

I actually just bought that RCA TV from walmart for my cab.  I just mounted it a couple days ago.  The reason I didn't want the flat screen is because it just seemed more authentic to me.  The only downside I've found with that RCA TV is that it doesn't automatically power on after having the plug pulled on it.  I'm just going to write a little program to have the computer turn it on on startup using one of these though.  It does remember the last input used.  Here's some pics of it mounted in my cabinet:

Just to clarify (I'm not sure which type of flat TV you were looking at), but tube (CRT) TVs can be flat or curved (just because it's flat doesn't mean it's not a tube TV in other words).  Other than the authenticity benefit with curved screens, one problem I've found with the flat screen tube TVs is that they seem to suffer a little more from geometry problems (distortions on extreme edges, pincushion, etc).  This makes sense if you consider that there is slightly more distance from the electron gun to the outer edge of the screen on a flat TV.

It might also be a manufacturer issue.

I have a Dynamo cabinet that I worked on, and I had to remove the monitor from the front.  It was mounted on some kind of bar assembly that just flipped out so it could be worked on.  Yours might be the same thing.

If you post some pics of your cab, we may be able to tell you how to get into it.

Have you removed the control panel and the monitor bezel yet?

The whole monitor swivels forward?

I'll work on getting that pic...But i finally was able to open the coin-box...From what i can tell, it looks like the same cabinet your were referring to...So how do you unlock it, so i can open up the control panel?  My CP seems to be stuck for some reason...Any ideas?

Also, which tv brand would you guys recommend RCA, Phillips, or Sansui?  Those were the only tv's i saw that had component & 24" size? Can a Dynamo Cabinet fit a 27" tv?

I apologize to sidetrack you, but do you know the model numbers of the TV's?  They sound interesting,.

*Update

I was able to get the monitor out of my cabinet...After opening up the coin box, i was able to get to the control panel..Turns out there was one more latch in the middle...Then i was able to pull out the control panel...I unscrew & remove the monitor...

I got my computer hooked up to the rca last night using a DVI to component adapter.  It looked pretty nice although I haven't messed much with the settings or soft15 yet.  I'm going to try to figure out how to get into the service menu tonight to fix the minor overscan it had.  I'll try to post some pics tonight or tomorrow if I finish tweaking it.

krazy_kenny1, those pics with your TV mounted have really eased my mind, and I may look into that same TV as well for the cab I'm starting.

I'm a total noob with this stuff, so if I figured it out, you should be fine with that TV.  I haven't figured out how to enter the service menu yet though...the usual RCA method doesn't seem to work...
