NESVS control to PC Help!
« on: April 20, 2003, 08:20:50 pm »
OK

This has been quit the productive day so far. I have decided to go away from the console, and use a pc. The monitor wiring seems very well documented, but im having a problem finding control instructions. I have a Nintendo VS control panel. can anyone help?

Hey there,

If you're going to be interfacing the control panel to a pc, you need to convert the button presses into signals the pc can understand.

There's a heap of ways to do this, from hacking a keyboard (not as hard as it sounds) or a gamepad/joystick (even easier), to buying a special "keyboard encoder" designed specifically for the purpose.

There are pros and cons of each, with the biggest "pro" of hacking a keyboard or gamepad being extreme cheapness!

Best place to start is to look over to your left and click on "interfaces".

My advice, if you have the patience but little in the way of funding, is to read the keyboard hack guides carefully and give this a go.

the IPAC from Andy www.ultimarc.com is ace if you can afford it though!  ;D
Shut up! Bloody Vikings!!

ultimarc is a great resource/products...

but may I just point out  that the keywiz is a cheap keyboard encoder  (I only bring it up as the O.P. mentioned being a destitute college student...)

good luck with your project...

I did find the KEYwiz websight, and 26 bucks fits any budget. Have you used this before, and is it an easy way of doing this? thanks for your other responses.

I've used the middle tier one (the one with the terminal barrier thingie)... and am pretty darn happy with it... It's much easier/better than my sidewinder hack that was in there previously.

THe cheapest key wiz does require some very rudimentary soldering though (there's no barrier strip/screw terminal thingie)
But if you were considering a keyboard hack or a gamepad hack, you'd be soldering anyways...

Save yourself some agrivation.  Buy the standard model.  For seven bucks more, you can't beat it.
