Misfit Mame Resolutions..
« on: June 09, 2007, 11:12:04 pm »
OK, this is driving me nuts. Recently I started playing around with Misfit Mame v113.5 and have found some really cool games on it. What I can't figure out is why the default display settings in it make the good 'ol games like Pac-Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Mr Do. ect. ect look so good on this PC monitor. They have that "blurred" arcade monitor look and I really like it.

For the life of me tho, I can't get any of my other versions of plain old Mame32 to look like that. I've tried every combo of settings I can think of and even went so far as too try different Mame32 versions (ie: .65 .75 .85 .95 & .105) Am I missing something obvious here?

filters? scalers? effects?

Try Mameplus (or Mame32 plus plus); you can select different Visual Effects and Image Enhancement types for your game under the "Advanced" tab in your game's Properties(right-click) or for all your games in Options--Default Game Options.

I get some weird characters on the features page of the Mameplus site. What are its merits? And it apparently has the same kind of effects available as Advancemame?

OK, figured it out finally. I used the same settings that are default in Mame32plus and MisfitMame but are not default on some versions of Mame32 from v.70 on. They are exactly what I am looking for. I've went back as far as version70 on Mame32 and this worked. I'll post my settings if anyone cares:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the Main Screen go to "Options"
Then "Default Game Options..."
Then under Display Tab make sure all these are checked:

Start out maximized
Enforce aspect ratio
Throttle
Clean Stretch = Auto
Rotation = Default
Effects = None
All other settings leave at default

Under the Advanced Tab check only these:

Use Direct Draw
Stretch using hardware
Switch resolutions to fit
Switch color depths to fit
Resolution box, all = auto
Frame Skipping = auto

Under the Direct3D tab check only these:

Use Direct3D
Texture Management
Rotate Effects
Filter = Bilinear
Effect = None
Prescale = Auto

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love the look this gives the games on a PC monitor. Try it  ;D

Dude, I'm not sure what you're doing there is healthy for your monitor. Essentially, DD and D3D are supposed to be used separately. I don't know Mameplus, but every other version since the rewrite will only let you use one or the other. Since you're not using any effects, you're not getting something haywire, but like I said I don't know if it's monitor healthy.

And regarding Mameplus, NickG, I can't even downloade it. Some IE7 error or something. weird.

Again, on mameplus: was able to get it through mega games. And now I see: you have to compile it. But, why?

Really? Maybe we are talking about 2 different things here. I've got all my Mame32 versions to run with both DD and D3D checked. And they work just fine. In fact I can't get the effect I want without it set that way. Thats also the default settings in both the MisfitMame & the MamePlus versions I'm using. Thats how I figured this out.

I got monitors to burn tho so I'll let it run awhile and see what it does.  :dunno

As for MamePlus, here is where I got my copy the other day:

http://mame.emu-zone.org/

Works great and no compiling or nothin'.

Before the video rewrites, MAME32 had two separate tabs for ddraw and d3d.  You can check them both, but I'm fairly certain only one or the other is used if you select them both (I'm guessing d3d).

IG: yeah, I get some screwy language issue in Explorer. In any case, I was able to acquire Mameplus. I don't know why you have to compile it, first.

And (sorta like I said, but more specifically) since the re-write, every version I know of has DD and D3D on the same menu, so you can only select one or the other. I just tried .113 and it's just like the others: it defaults at D3D, and is part of the same drop-menu as DD (and GDI, whatever that is). So I don't know how you can select both of them. With regard to using switchres with either DD/hwstretch or D3D, either of the latter will over-ride the switchres. Even if you could do DD and D3D, simultaneously, D3D would over-ride DD.

I messed around with different combinations of the three on Mame32 .104 (before the re-write, hence DD and D3D can run simultaneously), and this is what occurs:

- switchres makes things very defined

- both DD and D3D will over-ride switchres, to varying degrees

- D3D over-rides them all.

Since you have no effects selected, you're basically getting D3D (or DD, as it turns out the same) with no effects. A lot of people like this. I'd be okay with it if it was simply diffuse - but it looks out of focus to me. I find myself constantly trying to ocularly resolve the image. (Some intuition in me suspects this may be related to me not needing glasses. Who knows.)

However, I didn't know misfit had been continued, and I found pacman 3D. Not sure I like it, but definitely a trip. I wish someone would work on the Monaco GP drivers. Even faking it would be fine; it doesn't seem to need much to work right.

Hey. You are right. Good call. I don't need DD checked. I'm curious tho. How does it know to stretch the  image since that option is not available now that I unchecked DD?

And I wonder why Misfit and Plus have both DD & D3D checked as default?

shortair: I guess I should have stated earlier that I've been testing this on versions .61 thru .105  When was the rewrite?

I believe d3d always stretches the image (it basically makes it a single large polygon, which when stretched adds the anti-aliasing that 'blurs' the image).

When was the rewrite?

I'm pretty sure it was v0.106.

No, it was .108 or 9. On .106 they got rid of hiscore save.

IG: that figures. I looked back up top to make sure what you'd said (.113), but I had the feeling you had switched circumstances. So, yeah, you're just getting D3D with no effects. Same as DD with no effects.

It was started, yeah, but wasn't fully-featured till .108, I think. Also, as we're talking about Mame32 interface, here, .106 was still the old interface where you could select both at the same time. By .108 you couldn't...which still doesn't matter, cos D3D over-rides the other modes, anyways.
