Help with coin mech
« on: June 08, 2007, 09:55:28 pm »
I recently bought three of these off ebay, complete with 25c coin mechanisms.  Tested them out freestanding last night but every quarter I tried was rejected.  Took all three apart and played around many many times today, and somehow got one of them to work 4 times out of 5.  However, I have no idea what made the difference as the other two still reject everything.  Is there some way to adjust these things?  The coin mech does not seem to be the one illustrated on the Happ page so I've attached some photos of it.  It is plastic and has the number 905542 stamped near the top and a logo that appears to be the letter "a" surrounded by the letter "C" with "patents pending" in small letters beneath that.  Can anyone help?  I'm pulling my hair out with this thing and am considering trying to modify it into a pushbutton.

Thanks.

They're probably not quarter mechs, but rather token mechs.  I'm betting you have various tokens laying around, so try those.  You may also be able to get a sense of what size coin it accepts by checking where in the coin path it is rejected and looking at the size that element will pass.

It's also possible that they accept foreign currency.

I know I've seen that mech before, but I can't identify it.  That's a bog standard coin mech, so you could replace it if it doesn't suit your needs and cannot be adjusted.

You have a Happ Controls # 40-0023-00P Single Front Plate Assembly. However, someone has replaced the stock Happ Controls/Asahi Seiko coin mechs with Coinco (Coin Acceptors, Inc.) model 5300 plastic coin mechs.

Here's the manual:

http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Coin_Mechs_Etc/Coinco/Coinco_5300_Series_Parts_List.pdf

While at that site, also download the Coinco Foreign/Token mechs list. The paper label on the back of the Coinco mech will have numbers on it that should match up with the Foreign/Tokens mech list to tell you what country and denomination your mechs are.

Also, as with any mechanical coin mechanism, the mech MUST BE LEVEL. This includes side-to-side and front-to-back otherwise coins will be rejected. The Coinco 5300 series is particularly sensitive to quarters that are very worn. Quarters which have smooth edges (serrations worn off or excessively worn) WILL BE REJECTED (that's the way they designed it).

I'm the one who submitted most of the coin mech manuals to arcarc.

BTW, Coinco bailed out of the amusement machine coin mech and coin door market ten years ago. Coinco's competitor, Coin Mechanisms, Inc. bought the rights to reproduce the token version of the 5300 mech, but not the quarter version. Coin Mechanisms, Inc places one of their company (Coin Mech) logo decals over the original Coin Acceptors name which is embossed in the original plastic molds still.
