What parts do I keep? (with PICS)
« on: May 27, 2007, 07:31:47 pm »
This is my second Mame CAB, however, it's the first one I'm using a 25" arcade monitor (WG 25K7193). Here are my questions:

1. I'm putting a CPU tower into the CAB so I'm curious what I need to use to hook up power to my arcade monitor.  I'll be using an ArcadeVGA PCI-E card.

The monitor has a sign that states that I must use an isolation transformer (PIC 1) with the monitor.  I have the transformer (PIC 2) so do I still need to keep that in my CAB hooked up to the power supply (PIC 3)?

2. The original CAB had a Jamma harness (PIC 4) hooked up to the power supply (PIC 3), can I keep the harness out of the CAB since I will not be using it?  If I'm not using the Jamma harness, I assume I can use the power supply to feed power to my lighted trackball, coin lamps, and coin counter?

3. Can I also hook up the light for my marquee to the power supply box (PIC3)?  As you can see in the PIC (#5), my light has 4 wires (left side of PIC) and is also hooked up to a switch on top of the CAB with the other 4 wires (right side of PIC).  What is suggested how I can hook up the marquee?

Thanks for your time, your feedback and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

1. You do need the isolation transformer.  You cannot hook it up to the power supply.  The power supply outputs dc voltages and was designed to run a PCB.  The isolation transformer should be powered by the AC line voltage and branch off after the power switch.

2. You don't need the JAMMA harness (unless you're running a Jpac).  I don't think you should use the power supply to run just the trackball, and coin lights.  Those kinds of power supplies need a decent minimum load on them or they overheat and die.  For that small amount of current, you could draw it from your computer power supply.

3. You can't use the power supply to power the marquee light.  They take A/C line voltage.  Usually 115vac  (unless it's a Nintendo cabinet, then it's 100vac).  Hook the wiring for the marquee light in at the same place as you hook in the isolation transformer.  You could use barrier strips or wire nuts, or soldering and heat shrink.

Good luck,
Rocky

Thanks Rocky.  I was able to get my marquee light to work off the power supply and I still have the isolation transformer running off the same power supply unit.  I was thinking of just running the coin lamps, counter, and trackball light from the CPU as well.  Thanks again for the feedback.

You seem to have it backwards.

AC power comes in through wires... it should then branch off at one point, sending AC power to the isolation transformer, and another set of wires sending power to the DC Power Supply (and possible yet another set feeding the marquee lighting).

Then from the DC power supply it would power the JAMMA harness, coin door lights, coin counter (if present).
NO MORE!!
