Mame on other devices?
« on: May 25, 2007, 01:31:14 am »
Is there a version of mame for blackberries (No...not the fruit).

My cellphone is dying and I thought it might be worth looking in to one of the new smart phones.  It would be really cool to be able to play a few classics via mame on one of these.

I know the windows pocket PC's have a version but what about Symbian or Blackberry?

Heck even ipod's have a version of mame.

Oh, Please, Oh please...!   ;D

there's deffo a Symbian version, as i used to have it on my Nokia 6600

http://www.harmonicode.com/EEMame/

a quick Google and search of Handango and the official MAME site revealed nothing for Blackberry tho, are they not aimed more at business users rather than the general public?

i have to say, i've tried my wife's Blackberry and i much prefer my XDA IIi for ease of use, plus i can use mine for SatNav as well.

Thanks for that link.  More specifically I'm looking at the Blackberry pearl.  (hey it has a trackball!)  I'm pretty sure it can run a port of mame but I guess there isn't one.  :'(

My other choice is the nokia E62.  It's more bulky than I would like but runs on symbian.  Though the port you linked to does not currently support it...he says it should soon.

Normally I wouldn't considder one of these phones but with my current one on it's last legs and a good price for a refurb model I'm considering it.  It would be pretty cool to have mame on my phone!

How well does the Symbian port run the classics? (digdug, galaga, D_kong, centipede, etc...)

I run EEMame on my Nokia NGage2 and it works great with the classics. Requires an old romset. However the game pad on the Ngage is pretty lousy when it comes to playing games that originally had a 4 way joystick...

I didn't have too big of a problem with the Symbian version on my N-Gage QD either. Pac games ran great, but I could never get Galaga to run. Most other classics ran well. I played a lot of Frogger, Kangaroo, Ms Pac, Burgertime, DK and DK Jr on it. I had more fun with that and Picodrive (a Genesis emulator) than I did with the actual N-Gage games.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I know this doesn't have cellphone capability, but I have been really impressed with my Tapwave Zodiac 2 for almost a year now... if you haven't heard about it, this is a true gaming PDA that came out about 5 years ago, but the company folded due to poor 3rd party dev't.  However, the users community is still alive and has come out with some great emulators, including for PalmMAME, SNES, Genesis, and so on...

Nothing like playing Metal Slug on your own PDA... unfortunately we're currently limited to MAME v0.36.
Would've LOVED to have gotten Marvel Super Heroes to work on my PDA...

You can't find them anymore via 1st- production distributors, but there's a second-hand market on Ebay...

Another option is the GP2X, but haven't tried this yet...
