I fried my computer the other day & built a new computer, but when I plug in my trackball & spinner into the new computer they don't work and aren't recognized in my new computer. Is it possible that my trackball & spinner were fried also?

Trackball = Betson Imperial USB
Spinner = SlikStik Tornado USB
New Computer = Pent D 3.33Ghz, XP Home SP2

Being that XP Home was a new install, I wondered if there was a driver issue.  When I plug in my trackball, I get the sound that a USB device has been plugged in, but get a "device not recognized". When I plug in my spinner it says new device is ready to use, but when I spin the spinner, nothing happens. Weird thing is my IPAC worked after the drivers were installed. I have another computer that has Vista and when I plug the spinner in it recognizes it, but when I spin It don't spin.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx in advance,

What do you mean by "fried"?

I can't say for sure for these devices but generally mouse devices use a generic driver that windows already has. This is probably the case since you say the spinner comes up as "new device is ready to use".

In most cases the "device not recognized" means the device or in some cases the USB cable is bad.

If you have tried both devices on 2 computers with no luck, it is likely they are damaged.

I don't really know this for sure but you might be able to replace the mouse encoders on them. Hopefully someone could shed more light on that.

  • Slave to the stick.
They certainly could be fried. USB devices draw power from the USB ports, and if there was some sort of power spike that fried the mobo, it could have made it's way to your peripherals as well.

Thanks for the replies. I think they are probably fried also. I will take them apart and check the cords and hope it will help.
