Component video help (getting YPrPb from ATI chipset)
« on: May 22, 2007, 11:12:51 pm »
OK, this topic is an attempt to bring together several different threads I've been researching / reading about in these and other forums.

Firstly, there is a thread discussing a Windows registry hack for ATI cards to make the chipset output component video, not RGB. Essentially, the ATI VGA->component dongle (sold only to Nth America) only tells the device to output component, it doesn't do any conversion itself.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=212199&page=1&pp=20

In my readings however, I couldn't find the registry keys for Windows XP. So, the first question is, has anyone on this forum used this method to get component from an ATI card, and if so, can they asssit with registry info required.

Secondly, I've bought an ArcadeVGA from Ultimarc. Has anyone who has bought this card used the above hack to get the ArcadeVGA outputting component.

The reason I ask this is, I've so far had no luck finding SCART RGB tvs in Australia. They do come out, but it seems there are current models that do. Or maybe the market is just saturated with the el cheapo Asian tvs and no-one will bring any further European models to this market... an arcade monitor sells for $400 and upwards. TVs with component video inputs however, sells for $100-$140 new.

So, if I can get get my ArcadeVGA card pumping 15kHz component video, then I can get a cheaper tv to work with it. Otherwise, its spring top dollar for arcade monitor or keep on hunting for SCART RGB tv.
