CHD help
« on: May 22, 2007, 06:43:52 pm »
I'm running Mame v106 in a P4 2.8g 512MB 128MB onboard graphics.

1. Will CHD games run smoothly on my CPU?

2. If I order the CHD files on line, does it matter that they are advertised as Mame v0115 CHD.  Will the files still work on my older Mame version (106)?

That setup should run most games nicely. And yes get the latest CHD’s. You can still run them on older MAME’s by just using a rom manager like clrmame to rename and convert your CHD’s to whatever version you want to run them on.

I tried a bunch of chd games. In mame32 ver .100 I had to put my chd's in the same folder as the roms. In .112 I had to put them in thier own folder inside of the rom folder. Some game worked in the older version while the same game did not work in the newer version. Area 51 for example. Some games worked fine while other ran slow/laggy. I couldn't get simpsons bowling to work at all. Good luck.

It depends on which game you're talking about.  Just because a game has a corresponding CHD file does not automatically mean it'll play slow.

The Area51, Max Force and Area 51/Maxforce games were all running well with decent hardware last I knew.  So are Killer Instinct 1 & 2 and the Beatmania games.

Any game that uses a 3D processor (Gretsky 3D Hockey, Blitz, Gauntlet Legends) won't.

  So they don't work cause of the system I'm running or they don't work cause they just don't work?

Is there a list of working CHD games I can check out?  I just want to make sure the DVD is worth the purchase price.

The games Peale mentioned do not work on any existing PC at this time.  They rune too slow to be useable.

CHD's worth trying on your rig are:

HyperAthlete
Nagano Winter Olypic
Area51
Killer Instinct 1,2
Simpsons Bowling.
Beatmania

Edit - forgot:
- Maximum Force
- Vicious Circle

Not saying they'll work for sure, just some people have reported sucess with a similar setup.

nullDC runs SF III 3rd Strike nicely.  Otherwise, it'll be awhile.

Of course, you'll need to find the cd images yourself, and have a relatively up-to-date pc to have it run at full speed.
