Did my first cap kit this weekend. Actually, I got the kit in the mail on Friday and decided to just get started pulling stuff apart and ended up doing the whole thing in like an hour. The discharge went off without problems (wife made me tape the screwdriver to the end of a broomstick!
) and I even saw the nice spark that told me it worked. Everything came apart with no issues and the solder sucker I bought at Radio Shaq worked like a charm. I fully expected an explosion when I fired it up for the first time but was pleasantly surprised to see a crisp, clear picture perfectly centered on the screen with no foldover or smearing. I think I'll do another cap kit in my Pole Position, it's looking kind of washed out.
I am still dealing with Tron board issues. One board has the subtle graphics glitch, one board looks great but has sound that goes in and out and is missing some sounds, and one board doesn't work at all. I've tried swapping chips and nothing changes on either working board. I'm thinking at this point of living with the graphics glitch as it is fairly minor and at least the sound is perfect. Here's the most recent pic with the cab turned off.
There used to be guys on some of the boards that could tell you which chip was bad just by describing the graphic glitch. Or maybe it was one guy...I just remember thinking he was some kind of genie, or a wizard that knew what every chip on every board did...
So anyway, maybe leave it 'as is' and keep an eye peeled for one of those guys. What is the glitch anyway, that one mentioned before?
Oh, and looks REALLY good so far!
