Can I swamp my speakers left/right?
« on: May 20, 2007, 10:52:13 am »
I had to mount my speakers backwards in my cabinet. The left speaker is in the right hole and the left speaker is in the right hole. Does it even matter? Is there somewhere in windows and I can reverse the sound coming out of the speakers?

Depending on how you have them wired,  can you not simply wire them oppositely.  (ie swap the left and right speaker wires)?

If you've installed speakers that don't have easily disconnectable wires (and you dont wish to cut them), I don't think Windows itself has an easy way to reverse the speaker signals but some sound card drivers do.
So it depends on your sound card.

Good Luck.

(me I'd cut the wires and splice them back together... in reverse)

The right speaker had the volume control knob and I wanted it on the left side of the cabinet by player 1.

leapinlew,

Holy crap, I thought this would be an easy one... not so.  You could use this software http://www.actualsolution.com/ but it not freeware.  Do you have motherboard audio or add-on.  My X-fi software has a reverse stereo option.  There is no such thing in windows os, so you will have to use a software option.

PS. you could go mono for now until you find the real cure. control panel - sounds and audio devices - speaker setings, advanced - speaker setup drop down list - mono.

Can you solder?  Even if you can't, it should be pretty easy to open up the speaker that contains the amp and just reverse the wires coming from the PC...  Soldering large wires like that doesn't require any experience.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

If you're going to modify them, make sure you get the polarity correct, or things will sound quite odd.

What sound card are they plugged into? Most Creative cards include a "Swap L/R Audio Channels" in their speaker setup panel.

Hell, with stable speaker wires, he could just wrap them tight and tape them down if he can't solder at all.  Worst case, wrap them nicely around the tab and hot glue the suckers.

To be perfectly honest why do you need to change them at all?!

You will hardly get stereo imaging from them being mounted where they are and so close together.

I wouldn't touch it.

I was wondering about this the most...

it sounds like what I'll do is give it a whirl and see if it sounds off. it it does, I'll either put it in mono sound, or rewire the speakers.

Thanks guys!
