Powering up and Powering Down HP Computer.
« on: May 17, 2007, 05:15:59 pm »
Ok,  this is probably a dumb question.

im building a mame cab.   and for some reason my pc needs to have its power buttons pressed everytime i want it to be powered up.

i am using a power strip and shutting everything off via that strip.

i basicly dont want to have to open up my cabinet to turn my pc everytime i wanna play.    i do remember older PCs powering up when you supplied power to it.  but this isnt a on/off switch.

Is there a way to make sure the PC is always turned on when power is supplied to it?  without having to hack into my computer and add extra bits to it?

something via bios?  or Windows XP?

All Help appreciated.

Look under power options in your bios.  It normally will say something like "power on after AC loss" or something similar.  If you can't get that to work, you could always wire a hidden arcade pushbutton somewhere and extend the power button wiring from your PC to it so you can turn on (and shut off!) the computer with it.

This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about that should be in the wiki.

Is there some sort of restriction on what can be put into the Wiki? The whole point is that anyone (who registers in this case) should be able to make additions or edits.

Personally, I have never seen an option for:
"power on after AC loss"  (which would be really nice in some cases)
but there is a common "Power-On upon keypress"

What I have done, is buy a smart power bar which powers on everything connected to it when it senses the appliance plugged into its "hot" outlet is turned on.
http://www.bitsltd.net/smartstrip.html

Plug the computer into the "hot" outlet.  Your marquee, lights, sound amplifier, and whatever into the other "switchable" outlets.

Set your bios to "Power-On upon keypress"
(you can optionally set it to power-on only for a specific key if you wish)

Voila!   No more opening up the cabinet to power on.

That being said I no longer do this.  People (or more accurately....their kids) who would come over would come up to the cab and press a bunch of buttons and then it would come on.

Just my $0.02 worth.

If your bios does not have the setting to power on then how to make a pc power supply power on when power applied. Hardware mod used basically the same as jumpering the pins to turn the PC supply into a stand alone PS.  As simple as it gets.

Hardware Mod
