SNK LS-30 Optical
« on: April 16, 2003, 03:17:42 pm »
OK Gurus!!!

I need serious help!!!

I've got 2 of the SNK LS-30 Optical sticks.  They have 4 prongs on them, but I'm not sure which prongs are what.  Anyone out there know what I'm talkin' about?  I can post pics if I need to.

I've spoken with videoconnect.com and they are aware of the LS-30 optical sticks, but do not have any documentation.

I called Happ controlls and the tech I spoke to said he didn't know if the replicas they produce are duplicates of the LS-30 Opticals, but they do work in .50 Caliber machines....  he did tell me what pins for the Happs version are what though...

I would assume that they would be the same considering they would work in the .50 Cal machines....but I wanted to see if any of you gurus knew before I risk frying my sticks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Aceldamor

They don't click, they freely spin....and the top looks like the standard LS-30 Yellow Octagonal knob.

Were you able to see the letters on the black plastic below each pin?

Hmmm, those look very proprietary by the style of the friction lock and may not follow the "standard" 4-pin optic pinout such as found on the Happ optic board.  You wouldn't happen to know which game they were originally for, would you?  If you could track that down (perhaps use RGVAC as another resource as well), then see if KLOV or http://www.spies.com/~arcade/ happens to have a technical manual for that game.

They came out of a Cal .50 Arcade.

This is what KLOV said

"The joysticks look similar to the LS-30 variety used for games such as Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and Time Soldiers, but they are different. The Loop-24 joysticks have a four-pin connector on the bottom of the stick that connects directly to the game board."

I tried a quickie search of the more popular manual archives and I didn't turn up a manual for Cal .50.

Another possible resource may be to search www.vaps.org and see if a member that has that game could help you out.  Worth a try, I guess.

Well, after searching for a couple of hours last night and not finding anything about a schematic for Cal .50  I decided to dissassemble the interface....which in the process I now have to re-solder a connection or 2 :-[ >:(

From the look of it.  It's possible that the first and last pin are connected to 2 what look like LED emitters through a 100 spoke wheel to the other side which I couldn't see.

so...it looks like the pinout could possibly be

from left to right with pins facing up:  (see pictures in previous post.)

Pin 1 Output A
Pin 2 Prob +5
Pin 3 Prob Ground
Pin 4 Output B

Pin 2 and 3 may be reversed.....not sure.

I could post pics of the dissassembled interface later on when I get home if anyone is still interested.

The letters were V B A 0. (great pic BTW!)

I'd guess that V is voltage and 0 is ground this would make A & B signal. V and 0 are the 2 outside pins, the ones you said connect to the emitters. The emitters get voltage and ground so this would make sense. The detectors have voltage, signal A & signal B.

I'd say your guess is completely opposite to what it actually is...

Heh....

Good call Iz....Thanks for the tipper!!

I'll have to give that hook up a whirl....I could use a standard mouse hack to wire both of them up since it's only 1 axis just like a spinner right?

Yes, and use mame analog+ to split the axis for you into 2 players.
