Gold Cab
« on: April 27, 2007, 05:39:07 am »
If one was going to make the sides of their cab gold... I was wondering if there was anything else out there besides paint, like gold vinyl? Still looking... suppose paint would do the trick?

If money wasn't an object, gold leaf. Have fun working with it though.

Otherwise, I used to use a fake gold leaf, it was called gold aluminum I think. It's slightly thicker and it doesn't have a strong gold color like gold leaf, but it's quite a bit cheaper in volume. It would still be costly to cover an entire cab in it though.

Then there's foil that's gold colored. I don't know where else it's used, but it's used often in the theatre to create faux gold props. Don't think you can get it in sheets wide enough to hide the inevitable seams.

Paint would work, depending on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want the crystalized look,  Paint would work. If you want the metallic look, paint would not work. The light reflection is all wrong. If you decide to paint, use automotive paints. Slightly higher cost, but applied correctly and with a good clear coat, nothing I've seen at Home Depot beats it.

That would be so covered in smudges and fingerprints you'd hate looking at it.

I vaguely remember seeing gold laminate at wilsonart.com but am unable to find it right now...  :dunno
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

You can buy gold coloured laminate, I've seen it before.

Another way is gold coloured aluminium foil, although it will wrinkle, that 'wrinkling' may be part of the effect, wrinkle it, glue it on, spray paint it with a transparent coating...

Hmm, thanks for suggesting Wilsonart I found their page with gold laminate... looks very nice but now that I think of it may look too... too... well, a bit like an appliance?? hehe, I think some good gold paint might be the key.

rosco
find a local theatre supplier of rosco stuff and tell them what you want to do , im almost certain theyll find an appropriate product, be it paint /film whatever. stuff in the theatre/film industry will do what it says it will do, the paint etc is very high quality, and not cheap. :o

BFAUSKA  are you there? ;)

I am.

I saw some gold contact paper in our prop shop recently.  I haven't used it and don't know where it's from but it would look like metal if it was applied smooth enough.  I think it would be critical that it be very smooth and it would probably prove difficult to apply well, it was very thin.

I am working at a different place for the off season otherwise I could thumb through the swatch books by my desk for various material recommendations.  I agree that Rosco probably has something, or GAM, or Lee.  If you find a theatrical supply company they should have some suggestions, I would worry that they would be fairly thin and that makes the surface and the application of the product very critical.  The Wilsonart laminate may be the best option.  They have a full line of metal look laminates that would apply and machine just like normal laminate.  Here is the page at their site

This page  seems like the most appropriate Rosco products, they are fairly small for arcade cabinet work though.
