Monitor Bezel question...
« on: April 24, 2007, 06:02:18 pm »
Fellas, One quickie.
Im putting my Pac cab together. What holds the black bezel the goes around the monitor? Does it just sit there? Double stick tape/ velcro? I trimmed it up and layed it down, but it doesnt seem flat, and wants to move. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Ya I just used double-sided tape which seems to work fine.

I used some Home Depot black velcro.  Stuff works great.  Mine doesn't lay completely flat on my TV due to the weird casing.  Anyway double sided tape or velcro is what I would recommend.

You can use small magnets or probably a magnetic tape would be best. Just add flat metal pieces on your cabinet and a few magnetic tape strips on your bezel. The magnetic field is so small that you won't have to worry about your monitor. Just don't stick them directly on it.

NO WAY!!!!!  a magnetic field even from small magnets around the TV or Monitor like that WILL cause Gauss problems. You will end up with colour distortions and potential permanent damage to the monitor. The only thing that is certain about your reply is that you have either never done this, or understand very little about how monitors work.

I just used black gaffa tape, or cloth tape, (I think in the US it gets called duct tape), and I used a permanent marker to black any visible edge parts or the tape.  Note that this tape will leave a mark on the bezel if you remove it later, but it can be cleaned off (assuming your bezel is not made of cardboard or similar).

Note that everything in the monitor well should be black (except perhaps your artwork), and then it is amazing what you can get away with because the light simply has nothing to reflect off.
Check out my completed projects!

Seriously, Julian...

Using magnetic tape will have no influence on the shadowmask inside the crt so long, as I mentioned, you don't stick it directly on the glass. Even if you do there are about 1/2 inch to the shadowmask behind the phospors. The hole reason for degaussing a tv is actually to compensate for the earths magnetic field. This field is much stronger than the field of any magnetic tape (at normal distance) I have ever seen. Anyway, how do you think the speakers in a TV set works. They are very close and have pretty strong magnets. Some are not even shielded.

Do not get me wrong here. I agree that "strong" magnets can disturbe the magnetic balance inside the crt and do permanent damage. But NO WAY a magnetic tape.  ::)

can you post a picture of the work in progress? I usually cut a 1x2 the width of the cabinet. Then I cut a slot in the 1x2 along the whole width. Place the bottom edge of the bezel in that slot and fix the 1x2 into place once you are happy where it's at. I do it a little differently for the top half, I'll take the wood piece that I use for my speakers and cut a slot in the bottom edge lenthwise. The top of the bezel slides right in there and disappears! I get a very clean look. There is a nailer piece behind the speakers which allows everythng to stay in place. I've never had to use velcro or tape as the bezel sits perfectly flat on the screen.

Sorry for the goofy picture, but the flash did a good job over exposing my work.

Lots of awesome info here. Thanks to all. Im just going to keep it simple and use velcro. I think it will work just find. Im kinda iffy on using magnets, regarless of the size, near the monitor. But thanks none the less!  :applaud:

Using magnetic tape will have no influence on the shadowmask inside the crt so long, as I mentioned, you don't stick it directly on the glass.

This shows your clear lack of understanding of the technology. It's not a question of influencing the Shadow mask. It's a question of bending the electron beams damaging the gun alignment and permanently burning phosphors.

The hole reason for degaussing a TV is actually to compensate for the earths magnetic field. This field is much stronger than the field of any magnetic tape (at normal distance) I have ever seen.

Utter rubbish.... The Gauss of the earths magnetic field is actually relatively weak. Otherwise you'd have bits of metal flying about all over the place and stuck to everything. The localised Gauss Field generated by your magnetic strips is WAY WAY stronger..... Get a Gauss Meter out and test it if you don't believe me. I can tell you now that you'll be registering a background field distortion as much as 6 to 8 feet away from your strips.

Just so that you're clear on this... The reason for Degauss on a TV or Monitor is to localise the monitor,  so that the earths magnetic field (which is significantly weaker than the field from your magnets) does not cause distortion and damage.

I agree that "strong" magnets can disturbe the magnetic balance inside the crt and do permanent damage. But NO WAY a magnetic tape.  ::)

See above, for the explanation as to why you are entirely wrong about that.

You feel free to use your magnetic tape on your monitors if you wish to.... But don't recommend the use of it to people on here who may have no experience of the danger you are putting their equipment in. And that's NOT overstating the case.

I work as senior maintenance engineer, with Arcade Monitors, every single day.... and I can tell you that in some cases even putting another arcade machine in too close a proximity to them can have severe detrimental and permanent effects.

Any "permanent damage" of magnets on CRT TV's/monitors can always be restored using a degaussing coil. No way there is anything going to happen to the phospor layer.....

Talk about "Utter rubbish".......

Thanks...

A very permanent damage is only really made when you actually bend or rip apart the shadowmask. This can be done by using a very large speaker magnet. General magnetic saturations can normally be fixed by degaussing.

And Julian, please... A magnet tape will do no harm to the crt. I have been using 3M 1317 for years. This is stronger than the ones people use normally. I am talking about fixing the bezel to the cabinet and not directly on the monitor. This is done by mounting a flat metal piece to the cabinet and the magnetic tape to the bezel. The bezel sits well and can be easily removed. The flat metal piece will even shield the magnetic field and make it even less "dangerous".

As you say, the electromagnetic field that the monitor generates, can distort another monitor. And magnets should not be used in combination with crts unless they are shielded. But we are talking about fridge magnets or stronger magnets here. There are many magnetic fields in our surroundings that can be measures, but they still wont affect the crt.

Nostalgia...sorry for the hijacking...velcro it is... :applaud:

And Julian...stop insulting people...this is not a competition... :( ...remember that you usually are a nice guy  :laugh2:

Its quite alright. Im gaining knowledge with the conversation, so its all good.  I dont think Julian is insulting, if he says he works with monitors every day, hes obviously passionate about it. He just trying to make a point.  ;)

You're right it's not a competition.... It's about not allowing terrible advice like using magnetic strips to attach a bezel.  As I said, if you want to do it to your monitors, then feel free to do that. But please don't advise other people to damage their monitors.

I didn't insult you.... I'm sorry if you felt insulted. I respect your opinion. The only thing I did was to point out exactly why I think you were wrong.  My experience says don't even think about doing this.

Any "permanent damage" of magnets on CRT TV's/monitors can always be restored using a degaussing coil. No way there is anything going to happen to the phospor layer.....

So what you're saying Level42, is that causing your monitor to run with the guns out of alignment and the beams bent isn't going to permanently burn damage into the phosphor layer and permanently damage the colour capability in selective areas of the monitor after a few months???

You're advocating fixing the problem by using a degauss coil, which won't fix burnt phosphors.

If you don't create the problem by sticking magnets next to the tube in the first place, then it won't need fixing with a degauss coil anyway will it...  ;)

Its quite alright. Im gaining knowledge with the conversation, so its all good.  I dont think Julian is insulting, if he says he works with monitors every day, hes obviously passionate about it. He just trying to make a point.  ;)

Thanks... At least the person asking for the advice in the first place understood it. Good choice on the Velcro by the way  :applaud: Many original arcade machines that have service removeable parts like that, use Velcro.
