Jamma issues...Resolved! Player 2 now working...
« on: April 24, 2007, 01:19:36 pm »
I was bored over the weekend so I thought I'd pop in this defective SFII board for some single player fun.  Well I had left the test switch on so I played around in there and tryed out the P2 controls...WHAT! they all worked!

I turned it off and flipped the switch back and Poof I had two players.  I didn't DO anything except let this thing sit on my shelf for a few months.

But boy did it make my day.  ;D

My daughter liked it too.

Original post:

So after getting my fill of Carrier Airwing...I pick up a SFII PCB...Built a shelf in my Jamma Cab (so I can swap between the two...)and fire up Street Fighter.

I played for about an hour and it was great...but I never tried to start player two.

I figured out something was wrong when I wanted to practice the moves the next day.

I get nothing when I hit the player 2 start button.  ???

I popped in the airwing and player 2 works fine.  :banghead:

Checked all the jumpers of the SFII and make sure they are set to defaults.  Then visually inspect for any damage...don't see anything. Even the actual pin in question looks like all the others.

What do I do now?  I really don't think there are any problems with the jamma harness, so it's the board.  Can I bridge this?  (I am a noob with solder)

If I grab a miltimeter what do I want to check?

(On a brighter note...It looks like I have to find another Jamma cab to test with.  >:D)

When I get home I'll post some pictures of the board and see if any Guru's can spot anything.    :notworthy:

check the system set up and make sure all the cab settings are correct,go into test for inputs and check the switches, try shorting across from the player 1 common to p2 start and then the reverse to see where the problem lies

Not sure I follow you...SFII used dip switches for settings right?

Is there some sort of software Test function/menu?

If so how do I get into it from boot?

Most games have a test menu of some type.  Did your board come with instructions?

No instructions...I DL'd the kit manual from KLOV and it listed the jumpers and the pinouts but says nothing about a test menu.

I tried some googling but came up with nothing...

This is a standard Street fighter 2 (world warrior) PCB.  Player 1 plays great.  Can't get player two to start.  Coins up though...

Anyone with a street fighter 2 board know of a menu?

Thanks for that.  That's pretty much the same info as on the kit manual...

...But looking at the jumpers again I notice there is a test jumper.

I'll try that and see what happens.  Thanks.

(you never know when a second look comes up with something new. Perhaps the larger text helped as well)

Does your cabinet have a test switch (behind the coin door maybe) ?

Yep you got it, that's what I noticed when grantspain posted the dipswitces earlier.

So went into test mode and none of the player 2 switches register.  Start, joy 1-4, and button 1-3.   All of these work on my other board.

So now what?  :dizzy:

(looks like I'm going to get real good at playing the computer and all my friends are going to have to just watch...But no that won't cut it.)  :hissy:

I just need to find the next piece of the puzzle.  Any ideas?  ???

Anyone have the Schematics for any of the Street fighter 2 boards?  I think SF2, SF2: CE and SF2: Hyper would all have pretty much the same Chip layout.  I need a map.  :dunno

did you link a wire from the player 1 control common to the player 2 control common, just in case you have a loom mismatch

I think you can rule out wiring, as one board is currently working fine.  Sounds like your SF board has a blown input chip.

The easiest way to test would be to get a third board and toss it in there to see, but that's understandably difficult.

Not if you can send me one.   ;D ;) :o

LOL, There's a chance it's a blown resister on the player two input.  eventually I might be able to add a replacement to the solder side.

I just wish I could find a schematic!!! That way I'd know for sure what is what.

You could likely trace back those particular controls from the JAMMA pinout.  Just follow that trace back to it's respective chip, and find the specs for that chip.

Having the entire P2 side being out is quite unusual to be sure.

My SFII now works!  :applaud:

I just hooked it up and it worked. (see edited first post)

I'm so happy.
