Competition pushbutton vs Ultimate pushbutton ?
« on: April 15, 2003, 02:53:46 am »
When I built my cabinet and control panel I bought Ultimates. My brother liked mine so much that now he's building one (on a much smaller scale though). He wants me to order some controller parts for him, but he wants to keep the price down also.

I was planning on ordering 2 super joysticks (like I used), but Ultimate pushbuttons cost $1.70 a piece, so I was thinking to get him the Competition ones for $.99 instead.

Ive never used Competition pushbuttons before. How do they compare to Ultimates? Do they work with 3/4" material?

Im just worried that theres a catch in here somewhere, and I dont want to order him sub-par parts.

ummm... the comps aren't $.99 the "pushbutton with horizontal microswitch" is   keep in mind that happs runs a deal every month, and these buttons are normaly $1.80 ea.... there is no catch, i just received my order of 30 black and 30 green, they are perfect.

bear in mind that i have not used the ultimates or the comps. from what i've read there is very little difference between them.

Oh ok, my bad. Yeah when I got Happs new flyer in the mail I just assumed it was the Competition, but I see. Anyway, no real differance it seems so ill order those.

The big difference between the two is the Competition pushbuttons are convex (they curve out, towards the ceiling) and the ultimates are concave (toward the floor).

Most people seem to prefer the ultimates, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is due to authenticity (most games use ultimates or ultimate-like pushbuttons) rather than any tactile superiority or competitive advantage offered by the ultimates.

That said, I have never used competitions, unless it was in an arcade and I didn't notice.

Wait a sec.  Are you talking about ultimate push buttons or the horizontal pushbuttons?

ok... happs... have 3 types... (actually.. more...)

they are ultimate vertical, ultimate horizontal, and competition... push buttons...

I've tried all 3 types...

now... ultimate vertical... stay away... bad... bad....
(ok.... when you install it... its easier... cos the microswitch is vertical... so, you can leave it in tact.... but this is a 1 time thing.... so, no big deal... but the feel of this button is BAD... compare to the other 2...)

Ultimate horizontal... it looks like ultimate vertical on the outside, but the microswitch below is horizontally mounted... it looks very much like most arcade ones....
pretty good feel.....

competition buttons.... the look is a little different... the button top is convex  (curve up).... some of the NeoGeo arcade uses these buttons....
these buttons are lighter in feel... and seems like shorter in throw.... (so.... in general... response will be a little better...)

--------------

if you want the look of real arcade... I think you should go with utlimate horizontal.... (assuming you're not into the minor Neogeo machines that uses competition buttons...)

if you want to max your high score in like "hyper olympics"... then you might want to give competition buttons a try....

ps: I'm using ultimate horizontal on my panel....
(if this makes any difference to you at all....    :-*  )

as always... above are mostly my personal opinions....
(or opinions shamlessly copied from other posts....  ;))

hope it helps....
 ;) ;D
