Should I buy this ugly beast ?
« on: April 16, 2007, 10:35:01 am »
I've seen this one already for about half a year ago. The damn thing probably won't sell, and now they had water damage from upstairs so I think it will go for very little.

It's a genuine licensed Phoenix machine for wall mounting. This ugly things were built in Germany, where they have a tendency of building wall cabinets (their gambling machines are almost always wall mounted).

I have a weak spot for it. First because it's so different from the upright, cabaret.cocktail concept. Second, it's not going to eat up lots of space. Third, it's so ugly, you just gotta love it ;)

I know it's not working, so that would mean probably MAME-ing it.... What do you guys think ?

yeah, if its ugly , not many will be kept , so from a preservation/museum point of view its gotta be worth saving from a skip , which is where itll go otherwise

Ya gotta save it!

I would snatch it up.  Then paint that ugly woodgrain case black (with rustoleum).  I would try to clean up the artwork.  All black with sharp art...it would be pretty nice.

In a pile of things that are ugly, that stands out as being ugly.

Finally... someone converted a mini-fridge to an arcade.

I wouldn't buy it - I would let someone give me money to haul it away.

Snag it as fast as you can.   :applaud:

Referb it and wall mount it.

That will look ace in a game room or an apartment.

Its a nice idea too, never thought about wall mounting a cab.  You could mame it and put a LCD to reduce the weight.

Is that based in the US or UK?

If it is in the UK, please PM me the contact.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

RayB, good catch. Seller advertises it as a Phoenix but you're right. None of the "artwork" looks familiar though. Also remember there were many games here in Europe re-named. I've seen some strange variations on Space Invaders f.i.

It's really a very old idea, as I mentioned the Germans seem to have invented it.

Check this out:

This is actualy a GOOD looking wall-mount IMHO !!!

When I visit Germany I always notice these special kind of money gambling machines, these are ALL wall mount.

It's neither in the UK or the US :D

No No, not ugly. (ok maybe a little ugly) But very cool! It's weird that this just posted up. I've just started looking into these things lately. Did you end up getting it?

Wood paneling is so awesome.   I do like it though.  It's a big brown box with a control panel that doesn't seem to have any place being there. :applaud:

I know there's a bit difference in tastes about woodgrain between Europe and the US. I always hated the fake looking woodgrain on f.i. cocktails. I mean, no furniture here in Europe ever looked like that kind of wood....

Even the more strange to see something like this.  By he way I am ASSUMING it's German, not 100% sure.

Haven't had time to go to that store that's selling it, maybe tomorrow...

You could probably blame Ralph Baer and his Odyssey for that snappy woodgrain look.

Yeah, ain't it funny that woodgrain was ALSO copied by Atari on the 2600 ? :D

And my brother and I thought that was tacky too then........but man, that 2600 itself was like a technical miracle...when it was new.

Atari wasn't the only one. My folks had one of these beauties for years. They tried to give it to me for a school car when I was 16. I was so embarrassed of it, I didn't get my license until I was 18 and bought my own truck.  ::)
