TV adventure at Best Buy
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:39:36 pm »
Well, I went back to Best Buy to try TV's. My initial interest was to check out DVI to HDMI. I remember a few/several weeks ago JeffAMN saying that the DVI-M was necessary vs DVI-I. I unfortunately had the -I. Got a pretty clear picture. They didn't have the 27" Samsung HD I wanted to try but did have the 30". Interestingly it automatically switched it to widescreen. But might've been a bit better with the -M. Also got some overscan, but not sure if it was due to the cable. In any case, it was pretty plug and play.

(Also tried VGA to component (just a straight cable). Hadn't set up powerstrip beforehand, so that didn't really work out.)

I think he recommended dvi-i.  Did you set the resolution as JeffAMN recommended to eliminate overscan?

I have never heard of DVI-M. check out this link, you shouldn't notice a difference between different DVI cables of the same build quality.

Oh.  I hadn't checked back at that thread, but now that you mention it, I think you're right, and that I did look through the packaging and saw I had the right one. Well, in any case, this was on an HD tv. I hadn't set up powerstrip, so there was a little overscan, but decent picture. It wouldn't even recognise the component. Then I tried component on an SD tv, but it wasn't usable at all. I was there over an hour as it was, so messing with powerstrip just didn't come into play.
