GALAGA Monitor this is new
« on: April 12, 2007, 08:56:18 pm »
What would cause a yellow tint to come across on the bottom right hand corner of my galaga?  I don't think it was like that when I first bought it, it is just something that I have discovered.

Mine was like that and did not go away with a degaus.  I've heard that the magnetic pull can do those sorts of things.  Try moving it across the room and seeing if it does the same thing.

Degaussing (using an electromagnetic field to reset the pixelation) should work.  Some monitors will have this problem just from moving the cabinet a few inches.  I've seen magnetic interference from unshielded stereo speakers and electrical wiring (as well as other cabs) cause this problem.  If left near the monitor for too long, it can permanently damage the monitor and no amount of degaussing will make it go away.  You'd have to replace the tube to fix it.

You can see the effect that holding a strong refrigerator magnet (or magnetic screwdriver) near the monitor will have on the yellow area.  If your magnet is strong enough, holding it in the center and making tight circles outwards can sometimes fix it.

Using a magnet to degauss a monitor is foolish. A strong enough magnet and you will end up permanently magnetizing the metal mask (or other nearby parts) or even deforming it. Use the built in degauss function or purchase or make an external loop that uses alternating current and actually removes the magnetism instead of making the problem worse.

Well, I DID specify a refrigerator magnet, and those are usually barely strong enough to stick to the fridge, so I doubt they will damage the monitor.....

Oh... And unless he's got a newer-type monitor or Nintendo-style mounted in there, he's not going to have a built-in degauss function.  If it's like most Galaga's, it will have a G07 or K4600/K4900 in there.  But I agree it's always better to use the tool built for the purpose needed, and not just use whatever's handy....
