Would this laptop work for me?
« on: April 12, 2007, 08:13:01 pm »
Guys,
sorry for this post I know u get sick of them However..i have been offered a Toshiba Satellite notebook. and need to get back to the guy asap. My question is...i was thinking of using it to mame to my lcd tv.. would it be sufficient? what level of mame games would it run..when i mean which popular mame games? I know it could run NES, snes and genesis would it be able to run n64? I would appreciate any replies asap...before the trade runs out... :) I would appreciate it..

Specs of unit are.

Toshiba Satellite A55-S306 Notebook PC (1.50 GHz
> Pentium M (Centrino), 256 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, A55-S306 Notebook PC (1.50 GHz

ram is upgradeable to 2 gigs..however video says this ...not sure about that.....

"this system's video controller is an integrated Intel 852GM chipset with 32 MB or shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, it cannot be considered a true graphics powerhouse. Though it will adequately handle most typical mobile 2D programs and undemanding 3D applications such as older games, it won't smoothly render midlevel and high-end 3D graphics. Thusly, serious gamers and 3D artisans may want to steer clear."

From what i read about n64..says "onboard graphics won't cut the
mustard here"  any ideas? however....project 64 says it only needs ??

It might work..any one have this laptop advise?

Pentium III 600 Mhz or better
128 Mb. RAM or more
Fast video card with 16 Mb. Video RAM or more
Windows 95/98/Me
DirectX 6.0 (latest version of DirectX recommended)

The laptop i am on right now is a dell with the same chipset....but i have 2.8ghz chip and 512 ram....n64 ran on this ok.

Onboard graphic controllers for Tosh laptops are not the greatest.  What is the price factor for this venture?

Could this laptop be replaced with a slimline PC?

Checkout www.mini-itx.com and have a look at comparable motherboards.  You will need a Radeon or NVidia 64MB video card for Project 64.  I tried it with a Radeon 7000 32mb and it didn't work as expected.

I use the same laptop for my NAS server and that is about all it is good for.  Toshibas are great for bog standard stuff, basic Mame etc.

You would do better with a basic Athlon Slimline Box and a nice card.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.
