Mag Stik mounting dimensions question.
« on: April 10, 2007, 02:12:21 pm »
I think I know the answer but I wanted to make sure.

The history.  I have a JAMMA based multi-game that I just put together in a generic cabinet.  Originally the cab had an 8 way WICO stick.  When I re-did the CP with new art (Thanks MAME Marquees!!) I used new buttons and a HAPP Super.  Well, I don't like the 8 way on 4 way games.  I started looking at convertible sticks such as the Mag Stik.  I want something I can change from the top as I plan on putting what ever I get in another game my family uses at my parent's house.  IE - I want something that is east to change from 4 to 8 while keeping hands out of the cab.

So, the question.  Are the mounting dimensions for a WICO and a Mag Stik the same?  By eye, some "loose" measurements, a few metric to inch conversions, and comparisons to this - http://www.ultimarc.com/controldiags.html - they look to be different.  In reading some reviews I did find a site where the reviewer had a problem.  There was no time reference so I could not tell if the current Mag Stik as the same as the one reviewed.  That person made a new top plate for his Mag Stik.  I could do that as well (I would probably just take a Bob Roberts Joystick template and use it as a starting point.) but I would prefer to get something that just works out of the box.

I am also open to suggestions for other sticks.  Frankly tension and throw are not that important to me.  My only real requirements are : Top changeable, I want an actual diamond shaped restrictor in 4 way to keep me out of the coroners, and I would prefer bolt in replacement for that I know as a “standard” WICO bolt pattern.

Thanks

Brent

I know the magstik is the same as the super. I've switched between those before.

Ultimately - I didn't like the magstik for 8 way games, but it was decent for 4 way games. I prefer a wico or reunion stick for 4 way.

The magstick is only the same as a super if the inner mounting holes are used on the super.  If the outer mounting holes on the super or wico were used then the holes on the magstick will not line up.

The holes on the magstick are 46 mm on center
The inside holes on the super are 46 mm on center
The regular mounting holes on the super are 66 mm on center.

So if you have holes on the outer holes on the super or wico they will not match up to the magstick.  If the inner holes are used they match up just fine.

Well, then to quote Bender (Futurama) - I'm Boned for a direct swap.  My super is using the outer holes.

I could still make a plate based on a metal joystick template from Bob Roberts.  Then again, let me ask, are they any other options?  I seem to recall some 4/8 way convertible with a little lever that poked up through the dust shield??

Good catch BobA.

My last cp - I used drywall screws and just screwed my CP to the underside of the plywood. Seems to be holding fine.

If that stick was the one from GGG it would need mods to your panel to fit for sure.

I think the cleanest method would be to use an adapter plate like the one shown in the retroblast article.

That looks familiar but not the one I was thinking about.  And yes, heavy modifications to the CP.  I think I will pass on that one.  Seems like there is one with a very small lever close in to the shaft.  I know I have seen it like a 1000 times but now that I want it I can not find it!!

Anyway, I am leaning toward the MagStik and an adapter.  Man, I just want to buy something, someday, that just works out of the box.  Oh well.

Have you tried the magstik as a stick yet?

????  Like as a joystick?  Used it to play a game?  Nope.  Never actually seen one in person.

I think this is the adapter than was referred to for Ultimarc joysticks.

It's probably your best bet.
