taking paint of plexi?
« on: April 09, 2007, 09:00:37 pm »
ok, so i got impatient in the painting of my plexi and put the second coat on too fast, the paint is on the back side of the plexi, so anyway, it got this crumbly ripple effect in spots that wend through the first layer and is visible from the top, so there is like ripply spots on the black nice plexi i made, is there any good way to get paint off of plexiglass?

Depends on the paint - but I used paint stripper and it didn't hurt my plexi at all.

it is rustoleum gloss black and maybe a little krylon semi flat, what is paint stripper, and can anyone else back him up that this won't hurt plexi, or anything else.  Or any other products or ideas?

Be very very carefull choosing a product to strip your paint with.  I don't know what product to suggest but I have a definite one to avoid, however I won't know it's name until I go to work tomorrow.  If you use the wrong product it will soften and haze your plexi.  I choose poorly and my results are shown in my thread Here

I will try to remember to check the label and report back, I do know that it warned about the possibility of softening the plastic and I did too small of too quick of a test, deemed it good and set about potentially wrecking my CP.  On the bright side mine ended up OK, but not shiny.

DO NOT USE Zip Strip original formula.

In general I would simply suggest read the product uses on the container and then do a test and leave it on for a while before deciding if it is safe.  I screwed mine up but I asked for it by ignoring the label and doing a quick test.

Good Luck.

Some strippers etch plastic. At Lowes, you can get some stuff called motsenbocker's Lift off spray paint remover. It is very mild, and does take paint off. It can take a little elbow grease, but is so safe you can do it without gloves.

Famous last words. :laugh2:  I enjoy the building process more than playing usually , but I still have a hard time turning the game off long enough to get anything done.

haha, right now i have a 4p control panel, paint messed up on back of plexi, painted black, a trackball hole and mounter bracket for my betson, but no trackball in it, just sitting in my room, no box under, the cp is on two chairs, and a 21 inch computer monitor in front of it, i'll post pictures either here or in the cp thing first, it is also running off my every day desktop pc, and i have a mouse and keyboard in the middle of the thing, also missing a 4th joystick at the moment because the one i ordered when i broke one doesn't quite fit, the three admin buttons are hooked up to nothing, hense the need for a keyboard, and p3 coin does not usually function and p1 and p4 start are a little slow, and also p3 joystick only has 3 bolts in it cuz one would run into my trackball mount so i have to fix that, BUT I JUST WANNA PLAY SOME GAMES!!!

edit:  plus temporary screw for extra hold from the plexi to the nasty piece of plywood under it with some black overspray on the sides of it.

whaddayamean finish it later? :dunno  It sounds done to me. ;D  I can't put down my desktop CP long enough to work on my cab, but it's not quite that kind of mess, I suppose I'm doing OK then.  It just takes a balance of playing often enough to remember why your building and building often enough to keep from giving up.
