720 -- playing it
« on: April 12, 2003, 08:35:14 pm »
I was very impressed when I first saw 720 degrees in the arcade in my college years (yeah, I'm old)  I was average at it, but loved the music, graphics, gameplay and the cool crooked joystick.

I've had a horrible time playing it with a spinner (probably because my spinner hack is pretty cheezy)  :P

Well, I tried jerryjanis's 8-way joystick hack and am impressed  :D  It's not arcade perfect, but it's playable

I'm wondering if others have tried this hack with a normal 8-way or with a perfect 360.  Let me know what you think. Is it smoother with a P360?  Can you get decent and controlled spins with your 8-way?

Also, for those who have tried 720 with Analog+ using an analog stick -- which is easier for you to control?

Interested in you input,

Rocky

i always thought 720 was played with a regular spinner until a few days ago when someone posted pics of the controller. that 720 joystick is one strange looking thing, i cant really imagine how it would work in gameplay. players must get a real workout spinning that thing around and around. maybe one day ill get a chance to try a real controller out.

my fav part of 720 is the halfpipe. sometimes ill get lucky and bust giant air and do a bunch of fancy tricks for a gold medal.  8) it seems pretty easy to play with a regular, light flywheel spinner.

Personally, I couldn't really tolerate playing 720 with the mouse or a spinner.  I never even gave it much of a chance because I knew that I wanted immediate control over what direction I'm facing for landing my tricks...  Maybe it worked better than I think.

As far as a comparison between 720 with the 8-way joystick vs. an analog joystick is concerned, there really is no comparison...  The analog joystick works better because the 8-way joystick only lets you point the skateboarder in 8 directions, and the analog joystick lets you point in all 16 positions making for much smoother gameplay.  The analog joystick lets you play the game pretty much the way that it should be played.

I'm a little bias ;D because I put a lot more work into the analog joystick control than the 8 way control (I just varified jerryjanis 8 way code).  But the analog control is so much better, IMO.  Because you have twice the number directions speed skating, jumping and landing, and that half pipe are a lot easier to do.  Might depend on the joystick you use, though; I mean, comparing a perfect 360 vs. the analog thumb stick on a cheap gamepad might not be fair, but I like controling with my analog thumb stick on my gamepad better than with my super 8 way on my hotrod.
