GRIZZLY ROUTER: Just took it home...

The same guy who is selling the Makita is selling this:

Is this any good?  Small 1 HP, variable speed.  From what I've been learning from you guys this seems like it would handle my slot cutting needs. (and any other light routing I might want to do.

Grizzly is a decent company. I own a grizzly drill press and love it. It's a beast. I can't say much about that router other than the fact it looks decent, I can say grizzly's customer service is excellent. The light didn't work on my drill press originally so they shipped me a new one no questions asked and handled the return of the old one.

What is the price on the smaller router? If it's low enough I'd grab both and throw the makita in a router table. Also, why is the guy selling the tools getting rid of them? It looks like a good deal to me.

I looked up the Grizzly on amazon and It's gotten some mixed reviews

Still I've thought about trying to get both.  The Makita just seems like it's gonna be too much router for me. I don't have a table,  but I need to put my hands on it to be sure. I think I'll go look at them.  If the guy is willing to bargain I can try to talk him down to around $60 for both.

Otherwise I'll keep looking.  For some reason I'm leaning away from the Porter Cable deal at Lowes.  So getting a used router that's a really good brand/model sounds better to me.  I'm also on a budget so shouldn't be spending $100+ on power tools right now.

Grizzly makes some good stuff. And they make some cheap crap that's just as bad as Harbor Freight. Knowing which is which will take some research. They're really more known for their large machines (table saws, jointers, band saws). My impression is that their smaller, hand-held tools are the same generic Chinese junk that everyone sells...

I went to check out this router and the Makita one from my other thread.  I ended up paying $20 and taking home the Grizzly. It was prieviously loved but seems to work fine.  It even has a bit installed. I took it home right away and tried it out.  It Works!.  Granted I don't have much to compare it to.  Now I can't wait for my $20 bit set to arrive from holbren. 

I pretty mich figured that the variable speed feature and the larger base made this much more attractive than the Harbor Freight cheepie. The unit feels sturdy to me.  and while I can see why some of the reviewers on amazon complained about the springs, and the plunge action I don't think it will bother me much.

All in all not bad for a grand total of $40.

The only other thing I need now it the 1/16 slot bit.  The two pieces are roughly another $20 from holbren.  When I'm ready I'll pick that up and I'm all set.

BTW, I've been poking around mininova... there are apparently a LOT of things out there to be had for woodworking and routers for download...
