Alright, lets see if I can address these questions / comments in order.
"I'd be careful about putting both player start buttons above one of the players, if you are playing a game where one player dies and wants to continue they have to reach across the other players controls, seems like dangerous ground to me."
Good point, this is why I originially had the 1P and 2P buttons in front of each player.
"Maybe consider the dedicated 4 way next to the 8 way as suggested in the "tricks you don't see often enough" thread."
While that may work out well gameplaywise, I don't like the aesthetics of it. Additionally, I'm trying to minimize the width of the CP.
" built a few 7 button layout cps. The 7th button really isnt needed. You'd be fine with a 6 button layout. Unless you are REALLY into a specific console game your you'll be playing said console game LIKE ALWAYS, everytime you go near the cab.
otherwise you wont hate yourself for going 6-button."
My current cabinet has the 7 button configuration. I play a good bit of NEO-GEO games so the 7 button layout stays!
"I'd vote for reconsidering that one. You can add them as hidden buttons, but I find they're userful. It's cool when your friends are around to use the coin door, but if you wind up playing a lot it gets annoying having to find/drop in quarters constantly. Since both the coin door and the coin buttons can be wired to the same place you can use them interchangeably."
I agree. I'll have to think about this one. The coin mechanisms I intend on getting will be modified to accept any coin, I want to use the thing like a piggy bank. Wonder where I can hide them.
Okay, with those out of the way, I printed out the layout and have it a quick whirl and I have to agree with the 4 way joystick problem. My wrist was directly over the 8 way therefore, I moved the joystick over about 2 inches. I'll give it another test print tonight to see what that does for me.
On a seperate note, what sort of buttons do you include for navigation in your front ends? I think you need probably 3 buttons, Next Emulator, Previous Emulator (or list), Start Game. Thoughts?
