Help! DVI --> Component Adapter Problem (pics inside)

Well, I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro video card and the ATI DVI to Component adapter (which says it works with the 9800 series of cards), but I can't connect the adapter to the video card because the pins don't line up. Below I have two (fuzzy) pics of what I'm trying to explain. Does anybody know what's going on here? Is there a way around this, or am I just screwed? I can't do s-video out because the TV I'm using only supports component.

one way round it is to use the VGA output connector -if your 9800 has one- instead of the DVI-D output connection.  You can get a VGA to component transcoder for about 35 USD.

2 things to do....

First, describe what it is that doesn't line up. Your photographs are way too fuzzy to make it out.

second, you could try contacting ATI Technical Support. It's their card and their cable. They should be able to answer you.

I'm using a generic adapter with a Radeon 9550, but I'm working right now... If it helps, I'll pull it off later and see whether its the DVI port or the adapter which is the oddball on your setup.

Your ATI card has a DVI-D (Digital Only output) port on the back of it and you are trying to use a DVI-I adapter (which supports both Analog and Digital) which is why it is not fitting because of the absent analog part in your digital output on the ATI card.

Sadly this does mean you cannot use the card with any monitor other than ones that specifically take the digital input i.e. Some flat panel monitors, Most Plasma Screens and LCD TV's

You could find out if your card does component out from the roud connector on the card, OR you can google for a wiring diagram to build your own connector to the 15HD (standard monitor connector) so you can build your own 15ping HD plug to Scart (which works quite well)
Or you may even find information to connect the DVI port to the scart directly.

Failing that I can't think of anything else, mainly because I haven't done it myself.

ATI makes a dongle for DVI to component. It should be available on the ATI website.

Wrong type of connector so it won't fit its the same as he already has.

Yeah, that's the one I'm using. ATi says it works with my card, but it obviously doesn't.

Jeff I think you'd be better off just picking up the correct vid card. I'm runnng a ATI Radeon 9600 with that same adapter. I think the card cost me $20-30 bucks on eBay.

Heh, I'm actually checking eBay right now...

It's not a big loss. I actually already had the 9800 card just sitting around from even before I got my cabinet started. Still, it's a hassle that I'd rather not have had to deal with. Little setbacks like these feel like an eternity to overcome when this close to finishing.

It's frustrating alright, just be thankful you're in the US.
When I need a part for something it's usually a 2 week wait, if Customs doesn't pinch it. Then it's a month.

Just to make it easier to follow here is a pic of the 2 connectors in question.

sadly the manufacturers dont fully explain the differences i the DVI connectors, and most stores and websites just lumpthem all into one "DVI" connector, much to the chagrin of those of us that have tv's with DVI inputs....

needless to say i have been victim to this mis-information in the past....

Are you sure you have the right adapter?  I used the DVI-Component dongle with my Radeon 9800.  The dongle was purple and had a bunch of pins you set for what resolutions you wanted activated (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, Widescreen).
