Army Research Institute
« on: March 25, 2007, 05:18:55 pm »
Take a gander at the cabinet I just picked up for $25.00 on craigslist.  If anyone wants one like it,  he has 7 more.  It is ugly as sin,  but I think it will work fine for a dedicated sit down driving cabinet.  It has room for a 19" monitor it looks like...

The guy was not sure what it was originally,  but being that there is a sticker on it that says "DARPA" and "Army Research Institute" I doubt it was originally an arcade cabinet.  My guess is that it was a tank simulator.

DARPA stands for "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency"...wiki has quite a bit of info on it...they are involved with a lot of different stuff...I don't have the time to really research right now as I am out the door to go to a birthday dinner, but will check in to this further.   Does anyone know what in the hell this thing was from?

I think it will make a unique driver cabinet...

Congrats on the score. That'd make an awesome sit-down, but I'd be worried about putting all that dough into it and then having the Army seize it for 'security purposes' :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

What!!! Geeezzzz Frizz, How big is your house.... I make this a purchase rate of about three a month!!  This is getting to be an obsession.

You're either going to need a bigger house soon, or you'll be getting a new wife. LOL  :laugh2: :laugh2:

Nice looking box though.

Shouldn't that last post be in the "white whale" thread?

I also wonder where these 7 other cabs are located and how he came to have them in the first place...

Nampa, ID.  Contains nothing but the cabinet itself.  Fiberglass with plywood monitor shelf and plywood bottom.  There is room in the rear for a computer and a PVC pip that goes from the rear to the front for the monitor wiring, etc.

My wife is damn near a convert.  She ENCOURAGED me to get this cabinet.    She has finally come to terms with the fact that the garage is my domain and as long as I can fit it,  and it doesn't cost a boat load of money,  it's OK.

We were just at home depot and I mentioned the largest wooden shed there was $699...and that it would make a pretty spiffy "2nd arcade room"...she thought I was joking...muahahahahahahaaaa...

Why is it that the coolest room in a house is the garage?  Second room?  Bah just say youre going to knockdown a wall or two.

Upon closer inspection of the cabinet it, at one time, had "TOP GUN" in letter stickers on the side,  you can see the left over residue from where someone pulled the letter off.  One side I could only make out TOP,  the other side 100% positive says "TOP GUN".

Sounds like perhaps early flight sim pods?
