tab > input (this game) won't save
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:36:48 pm »
Hi all,

I am nearly finished with my first cabinet, a vertical monitored job based on a Galaga cabinet.  I’ve got it all running pretty well, but when I went to change the controls in mame for q*bert (Tab key> input (this game)> player one up from “up arrow” to “up arrow right arrow” etc.) I realized that my settings are not being saved.  I guess it saves them long enough to play with the controls like I want them that time (which makes q*bert play pretty well on my Ultimarc Mag-Stik Plus in 8-way mode actually!), until I exit the game and start it back up, and that’s when my changes are lost.   I tried it in several other games, and it’s not saving the changes there either.  Another clue is that when I change the settings the new setting has a white background with black letters, instead of the normal black background with white letters.  In other words, they’re highlighted.

Here’s my setup:
Dell PIII 733
Windows 98SE
Mame .61
Mala
Vertical pc monitor
I-PAC2

Now, when I run these same roms on mame32 on my home computer and change the input (this game) settings, it saves the controller settings (and doesn’t highlight them as I change them).  What’s different between the two computers?  Well, everything except the roms.  Does this have something to do with XML?

In the mame.net faq it says” Since the input configuration files are XML now, if you have settings you don't want to lose, you can also try to edit default.cfg with any text editor. Find the line that says <port type="UI_CONFIGURE"> and delete the adjacent <newseq... line, leaving only the <defseg... line within the <port> tag.”  Should I do this?  I don’t think mame .61 used XML.

Let me thank you all in advance for any information and help you can give me, and for all of the help I’ve received from this board in the past.  The fact that I have a (mostly) working Galaga cabinet in my basement is 100% due to the uncompensated shared knowledge of a whole lot of people.

As long as I’m getting all mushy, a special thanks to Mr. Bubblehead for inspiring me to get off my lazy butt and actually build one of these.

I believe Mame started using xml in a much later version (.85 perhaps)

Yes, 0.61 was still using the older mame cfg format.

Crankshaft , I believe your cfg folder is either not created, or is read only.  (Later versions of mame automatically create cfg file, but I don't think 0.61 did.)

That was it!  The cfg files were there, but all of them were read only.  I unchecked read only, and booyah!  Full on action!

Thanks a bunch!
