Good Morning Ameri... Ultimate Arcade II?
« on: March 22, 2007, 05:54:12 am »
I was just looking at mameroom's new site design and I noticed that they did a webcam "kiosk" for ABC's Good Morning America using their "Ultimate Arcade II" cabinet..  The webcam kiosk seems to let viewers record video questions that the guys will answer on the show..

I don't watch GMA, and I never really stopped by the ABC studios in Times Square, so I don't know if this thing is still there, but I have to say it looks horrid!

Page: http://www.mameroom.com/services_productdesign.asp

Video:

Not so much the cab itself, as it's the one we all know, but the "art!" (if you can call it that)....no Marquee (although it's lighted).... Horrible plain logo (in a black box).... weird shiny texture all over the thing but not consistently... Who was paid to set this thing up???  A plain old white mouse? This thing sits in Times Square?

I mean if you spend the money or even have the idea to use an arcade like cabinet, with lots of space to pimp a good design, wouldn't you want to use it wisely?

I think I might stop by there just to ask them on the webcam what they were thinking...

The side "art" looks like some reflector shelving paper or something.   "Tiny" is too nice of a word to describe the screen...it looks like a 14" PC monitor in there?   They are pimpin' the link as if they are proud of it!?   They should SUE GMA for making their product look so bad (unless they had a hand in it).   When I see that cabinet in that condition  I tell ya,  it makes me wanna just jump up and go drop a few grand on one of their cabinets....NOT!

EDIT:  Hahaha...gotta love what the one host says "I LIKE THE NAME!"...no mention of the cabinet or how ridiculous it looks.   The monitor actually looks like a widescreen 15" PC monitor or something.   The least they could have done was install a friggin' trackball and gotten rid of that MS Mouse 1 or whatever it is.

I bet it has a ball...

EDIT #2:  After seeing the response below I figured it'd be only fair of me to point out that the issues I was amused with above seem to be cosmetic in nature (especially the god awful reflective covering).   I stand by my statement that they should reconsider pimpin' this video and just hope not too many people saw it (at least they didn't mention their name)...but it seems they have beat me to the punch and are already reconsidering the link to that video.   The cabinet ITSELF doesn't look bad...it's the reflective covering,  the cheezy "logo",  and the tiny monitor with a HUGE bezel that makes it look funky.

Thanks for responding though!

Actually,  we had very little to do with this project other than supply a cabinet kit.  The company who set this up for GMA was under a time crunch and their normal fabricator couldn't deliver in time...so they opted for one of our kits.

As for the link on our new website...we provided our web designer with a long list of clients/affiliations...such as being featured in the Project Arcade book, and many DIY arcade sites...our web designer placed that link there for exposure as GMA is more widely known than the Arcade hobby sites that we typically cater to.

Believe me...when I first saw our cabinet used like this...it didn't settle well, other than seeing it on TV.  Our portfolio is still relatively small.  As far as pimpin' the GMA link...I agree, I'm not too proud of this cabinet and we will be replacing it as soon as we have somthing else to replace it with.

Believe me, I would definitely do the same thing... ABC using a cab of yours, through whatever means, is a big deal.  It just sucks that this place really took your work and degraded it in my opinion..

Personally if I were to create a client list for my website, this video would cause me to create a few lines of summary for each client, just to explain that the cab and not the design was yours (and to keep the way each client is listed consistent)..

I love my UAII Kit and when Centuari comes in the Star Car and picks me up to save the universe, you can post my picture on the front of your website. :)
