First ... let me start by saying this:

~Mad Props~  to FROSTILLICUS for creating an illustrator tutorial that even I could follow. I really enjoyed reading it and even tried a few of the techniques, but I must be honest.

I don't have the patience or talent for creating art on a computer ...

And I need a CP design for my "Quasi-Tempest Themed MAME Cab".

So here is the deal:

For those of you that frequent the BYOAC boards and are "artistically inclined" I challenge you to create a good looking CP design with a Tempest theme, preferably something that looks a bit like the Tempest Side Art and Marquee.

Post your artwork in this thread. When all submissions are in, I will select the best one and reward that "artist" with something from my collection of "arcade stuff". I have a ton of it -- joysticks, buttons, marquees, etc.

Its not a million bucks or anything, but I guarantee that you will be able to use your prize when building your next MAME Cab.  ;D

Anybody up for this? I have seen some pretty inspired stuff come off these boards, so I know the talent is here!

What have you got to lose?

MM

Is there a deadline? I might try to see what I can do. I'm not the best when it comes to making art from scratch but when somone gives me a theme and some other things to work off of I'm alot better.  Do you have any rough dimensions, becuase if someone makes a good one you wouldn't want it to be distorted too much.

As of right now there is no clear cut deadline ... I still have "mucho" work to do before I am ready for CP art.

If I had to draw a line in the sand I would say I am looking for something close to the end of April ... so lets call it April 30th.

I will go home right now and take the measurements ... I guess I should have included that ... thanks for the tip!

MM

OK --- Here are the measurements:

Length = 43 inches
Height = 15 inches

Thanks in advance to all who express interest!

Hey, is the control panel going to have rounded corners, or have any kind of dips in the design, or should I just make the CP square and call it good?  Also, is there any specific color scheme your buttons are going to be?  Or are you kind of going off of what the control panel looks like?
 -Spring break means lots of free time for me, so I'll probably be workin on this for a big.

First ..... Thanks for the interest !!!   :)

Second .... Let me try this again.

Here is the CP I will be covering (obviously it will have a lot more holes in it when I am done).

I will have 3 joysticks. One 4-Way (red ball-top Wico), 2 Happ Super 8-Way (black), a 3-inch trackball (Happ, translucent blue), an Oscar Pro Spinner (steel w/MAME logo), 7 buttons per player (4 in neo-geo colors, the other 3 black) and the standard 1 and 2 player buttons.

That's about it! I hope it helps!

It would be better if you are able to do the layout yourself, and then I can work around that layout to make something cool.  I need exact dimensions of the panel and spacing for the trackball, joystick, etc.  Check this link for my own cp design:

To be honest, I am not terribly interested in a design that has all the controls outlined and labeled .... looks too busy for me.

I would prefer something with some nice artwork that is generic enough that I can place my controls anywhere on the CP. I am still playing around with the placement of everything anyway.

I hope that makes sense.  :-\

well, look at the image on a real tempest control panel:

wouldn't it suck to have the balck hole disappear because that happens to be where your trackball is going or something?

At least rough measurements would help so people can avoid stuff like that.
