Should I buy this Space invaders cab?
« on: March 20, 2007, 05:37:56 pm »
Locally I found this Space invaders cab:

Can anyone tell me about it?

It works, there's some damage to one of the rear corners.  They are asking $100 and I'm probably gonna offer $50.

My problem is that I'm not sure I really want it.  It's a kinda cool looking cab but I don't want to Mame it.  but I don't really want to play space invaders either.

Should I just pass and spend my 50 bones on something I'm more into?  After all I'm just a Noob with all this arcade ownership stuff.

I would do it, but I like Space Invaders. If you aren't interested, let it go to someone who is.

YES!

People will tell you that you *MUST* SAVE this cabinet and that you*MUST* love this game ... not true. Not true at all.

Wait for a cab that fits your needs and doesn't offend your sensibilities (but tell the rest of us when you run across stuff that doesn't).

Leave the stuff that you aren't sure about for the folks who, hopefully, will claim it and restore it. If they don't, it is neither your fault nor your problem. You want a cab that will fit your specific needs.

Having said that ... I would pick that up for $100 in a heartbea (and I dunno if it really is SI).

$50 is a good going-in price and you should feel NO SHAME for owning a working dedicated game before building a MAME!

Best question I have seen in a while.

Good luck.

Cheers.

I don't want to Mame it.  but I don't really want to play space invaders either.

What possible reason do you have for even considering it then?  Because it's cheap?

I would go in on it because I could use it for trading leverage. For every two cabs I see for sale locally, I see one willing to do a 1-to-1 trade or a trade with a cash booster. Somewhere, there's going to be a cab I really want and a cab like that could get me there with fewer bones.

So, does anyone want one red paper clip?

Don't get me wrong...I like SI. I just am not sure I would come back for more enough to warrant it taking up the space.  I played lots of SI on the 2600 when I was a kid.

I am thinking that buying it for $50, cleaning it up a bit, repairing the damaged corner and selling it might be whorthwhile.  Perhaps with some art, a marquee and a good cleaning this project could subsidize a full scale mame cab in the future.

Another temptation is that it's close...most of the cabs in my budget are over an hour or four away.  this is like 5 minutes.  And it is cheap so why not? (other than the space...LOL space invaders... :laugh2:)

Ok, bad .  ;)

Also any arcade cab is just plain cool!. I have so much fun researching and tinkering that the gameplay might just be gravy.

I hope that settles why I might want it.  I guess

Besides if it's a knock off I could consider selling the board guilt free and mame it.  I kinda like how it looks...

In that case, maybe you should go for it.  I had a lot of fun and learned a lot by buying a working arcade game first.  For $50, there's really not much risk to you.

Five minutes away?!?! What the hell are you doing asking here? Nearly every cab I could find within my budget is six or more hours away. For a five minute drive, I'd make the kid wait ten minutes after school while I pick it up.

LOL, I hear ya...I'm at work now and the seller seems to only check email once/ day.

I've made my offer and gave my # so now it's the waiting game.

And if someone else gets it more power to em.

Just to be sidetracked I've seen a bunch of free cabs on CL lately but even when the post was an only an hour old I missed em. Darn internet.  :badmood:

Well time is on my side...
