What fuse should I use?
« on: March 15, 2007, 06:56:21 pm »
Hi,

I have two LED-Wiz boards running 22 LEDs for a max draw of 1.36A. I am going to power the boards from the PC power supply. It was recommended to use an inline fuse if doing this. My question is what fuse do I need? I assume using a 2A fuse would be appropriate based on additional capacity for more LEDs in the future? All the fuses I can find so far are rated at high voltages and I assume again that I would want something in the range of 5 to 10v?

Help please!!
Chad

i can't see why you would need an inline fuse as pc psu's are protected switch mode, anyway if you want fit a fuse inline then don't worry about the voltage, just worry about the amps

The fuse isn't protecting the PC Supply.... It's protecting the LED-Wiz boards.

And to answer the question, yes a 2A fuse is the correct rating for 1.6A current draw. If you put a lower rated fuse in the circuit you'll be constantly replacing it, because it will blow due to thermal wear and tear.

Thanks to NAMCO I've spent the last 4 months constantly replacing fuses for the gun recoil on "Time Crisis 4"  That really is a crap machine. I've just uprated the fuses from 2.5A to 3A to try and stop it.  The average current draw on that was only 1.8A  but it would sometimes peak out at 2.5A and take the fuse with it.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. All the fuses I can find locally are 2A 250VAC. Are these going to work sufficiently or do I need to hunt around for 2A 10VDC rated fuses?

I can find automotive fuses that are 2A 32VDC though, should I be using one of those?

Thanks,
Chad
