Wiring your coin door to your "coin up" IPAC leads
« on: March 10, 2007, 10:07:46 am »
I'd like to use an easily detached harness that connects the coin-up switches on the coin door to the coin-up lead on my IPAC. What are you guys using?

Also, what's the best method for wiring the lights on the coin door. I have a Happs 4P over/under.

As far as a quick connector of sorts.... I use Molex style connectors espectially when you're only talking about a few wires. The can even be found at Radio Shack sometimes if they actually have them in stock in the stores. You would need both the MALE and FEMALE halfs. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103251&cp=2032058&f=Taxonomy%2FRSK%2F2032058&categoryId=2032058&kwCatId=2032058&kw=connectors&parentPage=search You may find these at another electronics type store as well.
You could easily have one wire for each individual coin switch, one for ground, and one for the power for the coin lights. (6 pin connector)

Power for the coin lights can either be 5volts or 12 volts depending on which bulb you are using. This can be tapped right off the PC power supply. Just daisy chain the lights together and run one power lead and one ground lead up to them.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

I also tend to use the Molex pin&socket series connectors, though for more signal type stuff like my CP, I use the smaller .062" series.  Radio Shack (sometimes) has the larger .093 series which I use for more power oriented applications.  A major factor here is just that they're easy to acquire.  The larger stuff can be had at Radio Shack, and I can buy the smaller series at Fry's - no need to mail order or drive down to my local electronics warehouse.

There are some other good options out there.  Inline plug/socket circular DIN and Mini-DIN work OK.  I use a 7 contact mini-DIN for internally connecting up playstation stuff (since I end up doing tons of playstation junk).

The various AMP Mate-n-lok series work well, also as do the Molex Mini-Fit series (which are very similar and in some cases identical).  A member of these series from each company is the connector used for ATX power on motherboards.
