board swap question

i just got a 48-1 board and have swapped it. i get the picture, sound and everything but my joystick and buttons will not work.  i have a 2 button and 1 joystick set up like pacman.

any ideas?

Is the wiring correct?

ie: Have you traced the wires from the JAMMA connector on the PCB to your buttons and joysticks?

Also, do you have the menu set to 'upright 1 joystick' ?

yeah, i think it may be the wiring.

is rewiring hard? im a total newb.

Well you must have a JAMMA connector.

So take a look at the wiring diagram that came with the PCB and it fairly self explanatory.

Just follow the wires from the joystick and buttons back to the JAMMA connector and make sure they are correct with the diagram..

it says in the manuel to press "Test SW" or "Service SW" and then power on to get into the system set up.

What is "Test SW" or "Service SW"?

I cant find this anywhere.

Test SW and Service SW *edit* ARE switches.

Check your wiring loom and see if there is any wires attached to pin 15 on the parts side or 14 ( N ) on the solder side on the PCB. OIf there are follow them and they should lead to a button/switch.

If not, you will have to attach some.

When you have some, hold the test button down and then turn the machine on. That will take you to the setup mode.
Use Test to advance to the next screen and service to go back.

Since your joysticks and buttons aren't working you can't do much until they are because they are needed to make changes in the menu.

ok i figured this part out. now i can add credits and get the joystick to work. however when i play a game like galaga i can move, but i can shoot.

i have a pacman set up with one joystick and 2 1player 2player buttons.

any ideas on how i can get this to fire?

i am assuming this is why i cant enter the set up screen.

Ah, now I see,

If thats all the buttons you have on your panel then you need to make them your fire/jump buttons also.

Run wires from the microswitches on those button to pins 22 and 23 on your Jamma connector for SW1 (fire)  and SW2 ( jump) on the parts side. Link the earths to the existing earths on the microswitches.

You still need to have the test and service buttons to enter the menu.

You could add some more buttons to you panel but if its a genuine Pacman then you prob dont want to do that.

Its simple stuff.

Remove your control panel and run a wire from each button to the pins I described above.

And then connect the earths.

DONE!!!!

You will need a soldering iron and some solder.

Take some pics of your control panel underside and your jamma connector

mission acomplished. well almost. i had to solder the fire buttons from the jamma harness to the 1 up button.

my problem now is that in order to get into the dip switch menu, or service menu, well, thats the problem, i dont have a Service SW button.

Also, while there were wires to simply solder to the buttons as you mentioned, there is no wire for the service SW.

can i add one, if so what is involved?

i am a total newb, but im glad i was able to do this. in fact it wasent easy because the insides are all hacked up and the colors dont match, so i had to solder each one by one until i got it right. LOL! What a frickin puzzle.

i had a guy build me this machine for a real low price so i didnt and still dont care that its like that, it just was a pain the a**.

Good work.

You need to connect wires for the test and service to get to the menu.

You can solder them straight to the JAMMA connector. Just be careful not to overheat it otherwise it will melt the plastic holding the little pin. It pays to 'tin' the wires with solder and leave a bit on the wire. Place it in position on the Jamma connector then briefly touch the soldering iron so it melts and sticks.

I guess if you were real careful you could just tape them there and disconnect when finished. Thats not the ideal solution but it will work. Just make sure they don't touch the other pins.

Bad advice really but to do that connect one end to the correct pin and then connect it to an earth. Either on a button or back on the connector.
Turn the machine on and it should enter the menu. Remove the wire from the earth and then touch it back to the earth to advance 1 step through the menu.

Same thing for your service button.
Remember, when you have made changes press Start 1 to save.

I hope you don't blow this thing up!

before i do this i just want to confirm something, i can get the screen up that says I/O Test but I cant get past it.

Is that normal?  I want to make sure that I dont already have the capabilty of doing it.

Thats the service button connected.
Did you try pushing it again to go a step back?

Try that first. But I don't think you can.

You need to have the Test button connected to pin 14 on the Parts side.
