Opti-Wiz PS/2 startup in windows
« on: March 06, 2007, 09:17:04 pm »
Does anyone have a problem with their Opti-Wiz PS/2 starting up in windows?  I have to start up windows with my mouse plugged in, and then switch it to the trackball. It is very irritating and it's pretty rediculous that it does that.  Randy T says thats one of the downfalls to getting PS/2.  My brother has a PS/2 and he doesn't have that problem.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

I may not have understood fully what you were saying.  Do you mean that if you boot your system with the PS/2 trackball plugged in, it won't be recognized?  This is NOT normal.

Do you have a non-standard mouse driver installed somewhere that chokes on the Opti-Wiz at boot, yet works when swapped with your normal mouse?  Have you tried it on your brother's machine to see if it works on his?

Yes,  I must first boot windows xp with a regular ps/2 mouse plugged in, then swap them.  No I haven't tried it on my brother's because he lives far away.  I do not have a driver installed other than when I bought a ps/2 to usb converter windows automatically installed it and says it is ready to work, but it doesn't work plugged into usb with the converter.

Ok, I think we need to take this back to email...  I'm still getting a fuzzy picture of how you have the system configured and it's probably not appropriate to try to resolve this one in a public forum.

But if you have the Opti-Wiz connected via a PS/2 to USB active converter, it's not necessary to use one of those for USB operation.  It's probably a compatibility issue with the converter (they vary widely in quality.)  The Opti-Wiz will run natively in USB mode.  You just need a passive plug adapter that converts the pins/connector, not one of the mouse + Keyboard to USB converters.

Drop me another email and try to be as specific as possible about all of the hardware in the mix.

Thanks,
Randy
