Jungle King
« on: March 05, 2007, 02:21:47 pm »
So, there's a non-working Jungle King cabinet (with new monitor bought to try to fix) in my neighborhood.  Is $100 a fair price, and are people going to call it a tragedy if I decide to Mame it out?

If it is in really good shape and not mutilated, then yeah you'll hear some crying. My taito cabinet was once a jungle king, but the cp had been mutilated with some extra buttons, and the cabinet was gutted.
Look up the story of the jungle king game on KLOV. It is an interesting read.

Well, this looks to be in pretty good shape.  The CP looks better than this:

(from KLOV website)

Haven't heard back from the seller yet.  It's possible it's already sold.  (It was one of you wasn't it...)

Any input on the price?

Jungle King is rare but not very much in demand.  Depends on the seller, usually, in if they think they have a collectible gem or just a Jungle Hunt clone.

Unfortunately, I'm new to the hobby, so I need advice.

Luckily, I don't have my heart set on it.  It is a decent price and probably only blocks from my house, so a rare opportunity.  I'll probably end up driving out to the burbs and pick something out from a warehouse full of old arcades, especially since my goal is a Mame cabinet.

Well since you're new, I'll let you know that this is a smallish cabinet that is best suited for 1 player at a time games. Yes, you can put a frankenpanel on it and play anything, but it would be ugly IMO. At most, you would want 2 players with 2-3 buttons each. You won't have much elbow room though.

Good luck!

It seems like the real wild card is the "new monitor". If it really is a brand new monitor then the value could go up quite a bit. If it's just an older, used, known-working monitor it's different.

Jungle King on it's own isn't worth that much.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Isn't Jungle King and Jungle Hunt identical save for the sprites?

for the most part, yes. but in jungle king the character is not only similar to tarzan, but there's a tarzan yell. jungle hunt is basically the changes made b/c of copyright infringement.

not a big deal on actual game play, but i just like the original.  ;)

And tarzan screams, vines, and anything else that references tarzan. The best part of that game was the tarzan yell.

I enjoy Jungle Hunt / Jungle King... but it says quite a bit about a game when people say the best part of it is the "Tarzan Yell"...

i guess i also mean that, as far as cabs go, jungle king had better artwork. so, considering how rare these are, i'd like to see the cab refurbished into its original artwork rather than torn into some mame artwork.

but yea, i guess it does say something about loving that tarzan yell, but it was so cool... ;D

Ok.  So the game is mine!  The seller came down to $60 and since he lived so close to me, I pulled the trigger.

Right now, I would say that it is non-operational.  Marquee lights come on, and you can hear the monitor turning on, but that's it.  And it took quite a beating coming down a set of stairs (before we figured out what we were doing.)

Anyway, I'll take some pics and post them tonight.

The monitor IS new (or at least refurbished...previous owner got it from Betson.) So that's nice, as long as I didn't break anything moving it.

It just bumped down them...more harshly than it could have.
