For those of you who may be having issues using a USB Mini-Pac with your MAME cabinet, make sure that you do not have PS2 peripherials plugged in. Use USB only as PS2 seems to interfere with the USB Mini-PAC (i.e. trackball not working, mame recognizing PS2 mouse instead of trackball, etc).

I spent about two weeks frustrated because I couldn't figure this out. Hopefully this post prevents someone else from wasting the same time and energy on setting up their MiniPac.

Are you certain that this is a true issue with the minipac and not just with your setup?  Has others or Andy confirmed this?

Rick

I suppose it could be an issue with my setup, but the fact that the Ultimarc website says "If trackball/spinner are used, USB mode must be used for all controls" suggests that it is really an issue. This info can be found under the information for the USB MiniPac (the only MiniPac that can run a trackball/spinner). Here is the link, look toward the bottom of the page in the paragraph where it talks about Trackball/Spinner Functionality

The doc is talking about the Mini-Pac only.  IOW it's saying: "if you attach a spinner or trackball to the mini-pac, it must be in USB mode, making the keyboard in USB mode also."

What you're seeing is that mame supports multiple mice separately, just like joysticks.  If you have 2 joysticks plugged in, one controls player1, the other player2 by mame's default; same with mice.  So what's happening with the PS/2 mouse also plugged in is the minipac is mouse2, controlling player2.  I suggest leaving the mouse plugged in and remapping (TAB, "Input (general)") the mini-pac to player 1.  More detailed info on remapping at mameFAQ (h05 & h03).
