Joysticks
« on: March 26, 2002, 06:13:44 am »
Hey all,

well I'm building a CP for my first machine and I'm trying to decide which joysticks to use.

Currently I'm leaning toward tha happ supers but I really want a 4-way onboard too.  I've considered the oscar restrictors and may wind up going this way, but I really don't want the 1/8" plates on top of my CP as Im still working out the design and don't want to design around them (plus, I want my wife to use it to play her old favorites (brownie points and a way to justify the expense :) and even with pins instead of screws, I don't think she'll take the plates on and off)

So.  to the original question.  I have a freind who recently bought a atari pit fighter cab which has 3 8-way (I believe) sticks on it with black balls on top similar to the happ ms.pacman replacement.  But Im pretty sure these are 8ways.  Does anybody know who made these sticks and if they are available somewhere?  It would be nice if all 3 sticks on the CP matched!  Also, Is there anyplayce you can get new balls for the top of the sticks? while I appreciate the authenticity of the red ball, I think the black ones would fit into my color scheme better.

Thanks, all replies are appreciated!

Unfortunately, the handles are molded onto the sticks, and I doubt there's any way to remove them without damaging or destroying them.

So here's what I did:

The Ms. Pac-Man 4-way is daisy-chained to the 1P 8-way Happ Supers, so you can use the P1 buttons on both.

Free resource for building your own rotating control panels!

Well.....   I guess I stumped everyone with this one!  ;D

Andy's new joystics on the ultimarc site looks like they might fit my bill but he doesn't have any stats on them posted yet. (8,4way? depth? price?)

anybody have the inside track on these sticks?

They sound like the wico ball tops.  Are they leaf or micros?

btw, using used joysticks are questionable.  Joysticks can loose their feal pretty easy.  I was going to do this, but then realized that joysticks are 10 bucks and are the cheapest part of my project.

So I bought 2 new joysticks, and used the best of my existing joysticks on player 1 and 4.  But I have to say, my 4 joysticks that came with my cabinet.  2 sucked!  Really hard to move, the springs to center didn't work, crap fell out...

btw, go to the oscar site and read his joystick reviews on what to get.  Supers are nice for some games since it allows you to rotate them easier in circles (timepilot, gyruss) but competitions are better for fighting games.

thanks lilwolf.

I think they are micros (I hear a faint click) I can't check though as I don't have the keys and don't want to go ripping apart his cab!

I thought they may be wico's but I checked their online catolog and the balltop they have pictured looks like it has a conical plastic shaft.  These have chrome shafts.  is the wico catolog picture wrong?

My 4way wicos have a metal shaft.  I think they are the same.

but do real the oscar writeup on the different joysticks on his sites (in extras I think).  Great review

Yeah I have (it feels like I have read everything there is to read about mame cabs in the last 2 weeks!).

I agree it was a pretty good review and it had confirmed my choice to go with the happ supers.  I didnt see a review of the wicos there though...
