Questions about Jamma and CPS 1 games.
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:34:17 pm »
I'm about to get a Carrier Air Wing cab. Its Jamma CPS1 with 2 8 way sticks and I believe two buttons each player.

How hard is it to add buttons to use with Mame. Would I just use a SFII kick harness?(I think that's what it's called *[and was wrong now fixed]* )

What iF I just wanted to get another Jamma CPS1 game board that uses three buttons?

Can I run Jamma CPS2 or 3 games in a CPS 1 harness?

I basically want to keep my cab stock but run mame or the Carrier Air wing that's in it.

Perhaps someday I'll put in another game.

Thanks

Questions answered, but in any particular order.  I will default if someone will correct me.
  • Kick harness, not kick plate (don't worry, I called it the "kick thingy" my first time).
  • Kick harness adds 3 extra buttons to each player, but it is not Jamma standard.  Jamma standard is 4 buttons.
  • Not that hard to add buttons, you would just need to drill thru the CP and the Plexiglas.
  • I'm not sure if CPS is compatible with CPS2/CPS3, but CPS2 is compatible with CPS3.
  • Not sure of your definition of stock means keeping it as is.  If so, you would not be able to play SF games or Mame because you have to add more buttons.

Hmm, ok, wouldn't I be able to hook up mame (using a Jpac) and play any game that uses only one or two buttons?

Does anyone know if a CPS 2 game that only uses two buttons would plug into my harness(cps1)? Since I doubt it is there any way to "upgrade a CPS 1 cab to CPS 2-3? I just want as many options as possible. Would I then not be able to use my stock board?

    So many things to consider...

If you'r going to play older games in Mame, then two buttons will be ok.  Super Puzzle Fighter 2 is the only cps2 game that leaps to mind. I think (but am not sure) that you'll be ok for swapping out the games. I believe the diff in cps1 vs cps2 (other than hardware) is where the kick harness goes and the type of "connector" for the kick harness.  Again, I'm guessing on the cps1 stuff.

    Thanks, very helpful!  ;D

So it if I installed a kick harness for SFII (cps1) and a Jpac, Built a custom CP with six buttons I could play any game in mame that used up to six buttons but that I will not be able to plug in a CPS2 PCB. Correct?

For 4-6 button games it seems like one should skip the Jpac/Jamma harness and build a new CP using a minipac or ipac. Unless I just want to play classic games (which I do).

Anyone here use a Jpac? How do you like it and is it worth it to use with a two button setup? I think most of the games I play use only two buttons...but I would probably upgrade later on.

Hmm...Thanks for helping the new guy. (one of them anyhow)
