SLIKSTIK Spinner mounting
« on: February 24, 2007, 09:13:36 am »
Ok, this may seem like a really dumb question, but does it matter what direction I mount the spinner.  Meaning, does it matter which way the bracket faces or does the circuit board need to be on a certain side.  Thanks

Uh...yah...it is.  ;D

Think about it...

IT'S A SPINNER!  It twists...around...360 degrees.

....hmmm...

 :dizzy:

PS:  The only question is one not asked...

...and this one!  ;)

Well you have to make sure the spinning knob faces up.

Yeah, I understand the whole "it's round" concept.  The reason I asked the question is because assuming this uses the same type of interface as a mouse, there is a difference in which way it could be.  In other words if installed one way, right is right and left is left.  If installed the other way, that could be reversed.  I just want to make sure that whatever way I install it, when I spin it to the right, the cursor moves to the right and when I spin it to the left, it goes to the left.  So all smart ass comments aside, anyone have any insight or pics of theirs installed?  As always, thanks for the help.

OK, I'll assume you are serious then.

Do you have said spinner? If so then just try it out in the different orientations and see how it alters the behavior.

If you don't own one yet then just sit for a while and think it through. If you rotate the base then how then will that change the direction in which the cursor moves? The only way to change that is by putting it upside down.

Thats a trackball you are thinking of.  When interface like a mouse it must face the correct way.  A spinner only uses one mouse axis so it can go in any way and it still spins on the same axis.

So the answer that it doesn't matter doesn't help?

BTW, I forgot, but don't buy a Slikstik spinner. Get a SpinTrak from Ultimarc or a TurboTwist 2 from GroovyGameGear.

The answer "it doesn't matter" would have been perfect, unfortunately, I didn't get that answer until Bob's post.

I already bought the SlikStik spinner though I really like the other stuff as well.  I look forward to trying it out.

By the way Patrick - awesome job on the microcade.  Very well done.  Cheers.

Well I thought it was clear from the first answer, but then if you had to ask I at all it might not have been.

I have the Slikstik spinner too. It's a pretty good spinner, but it doesn't work for a game like Arkanoid.  Ah well.

Good luck with your cab.

Because the resolution isn't high enough.....  It doesn't work for "Revnge of Doh" either!! even worse than Arkanoid.  Only the Groovy Game Gear spinner "TurboTwist 2" will work with all known games.

To be honest I wouldn't even think about that SickSlick spinner.... It's not a great solution.

Most bottles and jars contain at least twenty-five percent recycled Pacman.
And research indicates that Space Invaders are strongly attracted to people who have recently eaten meat pies.

except my favorite spinner game... DISCS OF TRON!

- RobotronNut (who is still waiting for one spinner that plays DOT and Arkanoid)

ace: mounting orientation doesn't make a difference.  Generally, the 'top' of the spinner handle is what determines 'left' and 'right'. Though in some screens of Tempest (for example, circles, or any figure that wraps around itself) this will change depending on where you are in the field.

That is a nice little gadget there shorthair. Price is right and sure looks nice too, seems like it will do what the blackhawk spinner will do at 1/2 the price. I wonder if anyone has tried it for Mame yet?

Here is a quote on the movement of it.

"Instead of using a mouse or joystick to steer and a separate button to provide thrust, the SpaceNavigator provides complete virtual control with one highly responsive control cap. Tug the cap straight up and you'll lift into the sky, press it down and you'll drop, push it away from and you'll propel forward, or rotate it left or right to, well, rotate."

I assume if you pull it towards you then it will go backward also.
Seems like it would work in a cp to me. Now how do we mount it hmmmmm........

Well...I've been thinking about this:

Did you watch the demo?   I could be wrong, but that device looks more like a joystick than a dial / spinner control.

It looks like it doesn't spin,  but rather rotates a number of degrees in each direction then "dead-ends"  It also has a forward, reverse and side to side action as well as up and down.

It actually looksl ike it would be fun to use to play QUAKE or what not,  but not a good "spinner" alternative.

Those are all things I've been curious about (except the range of rotation - good catch on that), so I called a dealer and am waiting to hear back. They don't even have them at Fry's.

Aside from the range of rotation, I'd be surprised if it didn't autocenter like the Z-Axis of a joystick.

From the demo it looked as though it could be related to a joystick with X, Y, Z (twist) and "throttle" (up / down.)     But I don't have one, so these are just guesses.

I'm sure it auto-centers along X and Y.  Z I hadn't thought of being non-360 degree nor auto-centering (which, come to think now that would follow if it weren't 360).  Of course, if fixed with spring and restrictor, these could likely be removed (and perhaps even fitted with a bearing assembly) and be very effective....in which case, I should probably just buy one. (Ultimately, it could possibly replace both spinner and TB. That would be CUTE.)
