Trying to find the name of an old Apple PC game
« on: February 23, 2007, 01:40:47 pm »
Thought I would throw this out here.  I have been trying to find the name of an old apple PC game that I used to play as a kid.  Since this was 20+ years ago my mind is not what it used to be.  I remember staying after school and playing on the Apple computers (remember the ones with the green screens) while my mom graded papers.  The school had a game that I thought was called Dark Castle.  But after doing some research on the internet I am unable to find the exact game.  I found some with that name but they were not the game I remember.  Some other games I remember playing were Organ Trail and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego.  So it is around that time frame.

So I thought I would try here and see if anyone else had ever played or remembers this game.  All I can really remember is that you had to make your way through a castle trying to make it to the top.  Along the way you ran into certain things that you had to pickup.  If I remember right you had to actually type in "grab" "whatever you wanted to grab".  I recall one room in the bottom of the castle that after you typed "grab broom" the next line of text said something about the broom broke and a key appeared.  Then you could grab the key and use it in a different room.

Wanted to see if anyone else remembered it.  Or maybe I am crazy and I have no idea what I am talking about.  Wouldn't be the first time.

Do you mean the game in this picture?

If so, it is Castle Adventure. I played the crap out of that game when I was a kid on my IBM pc. I could only get so far though.

you can download it here:http://www.dosgames.com/g_adv.php

That might be it.  I don't remember that exact screen and I don't remember it being that hard to beat though.  I will try downloading that and seeing if it brings back any memories.  Thanks for the quick response.

I knew that didn't look right when I typed it.

Shardian, that is not the game I was thinking of.  But thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe I would have better luck trying to find Organ Trail instead ;D

Dark castle was very popular on the original macintosh, but I don't know that there was ever an apple II version.

Here's an apple IIgs version:  http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/the_fairway/game_pages/dark_castle.html

I'm not sure I've played one that you had to type "grab broom" on the old apple II's so I can't be much help.  I'm becoming a mac head a bit though since I've been employed to do macintosh programming.  Some fun stuff in the mac's history.

You can check here to see if you see it in the meantime.  It's a cool link to browse around with regardless.  =)

I just burned the last hour of my day at work playing all those old games.  Thanks for the link Slycrel.

I couldn't get Dark Castle to work but I am not an apple expert so I don't remember if it was on the Apple II or Macintosh.  I will have to see if I can get it to work this weekend.  Again thanks for the link that site is awesome.

I loved that game. I must have beaten it 100 times.
There was a corridor in the basment where you had to wave the wand and a passage appeared. i'm not sure how we figured it out though.

I know it is not Zork or Wizardry, I found both of those and remember playing them but not the one I am thinking of.

I also remember another room where there was a crystal ball and after you broke it (can't remember how you break it) Merlin appeared and gave you some kind of hint.  I sort of remember another room where a vine or something comes at you and you have to use the knife you picked up in a earlier room to get pass the vine.  If you don't it sends you back to the beginning.

I checked out some screen shots of Dark Castle that Slycrel linked to earlier and that isn't the game either.

Maybe it is just a sick dream I had.  The worse thing is I have found every other game I remember playing except this one.  Anyone remember playing the math game Gulp while in school?  I had the highest score for the longest time in Elementary school on that game.

Sounds like it could have been one of the Kings Quest series.

Sierra was one of the big adventure game developers on the Apple ][.  Might want to search through some of their old games.

I like cannonball blitz for the apple II.

Very Donkey Kong like.

I think my biggest problem is I can't figure out which system it was on.  I am not very knowledgeable on the Apple system.  I know it was one of the earlier systems because it had very few colors.  But I don't know if that was Apple II, II+ or IIgs.
