Sega altered beast not working
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:26:56 pm »
Hi, I just bought a Sega altered beast for cheap because it was not working. When you turn it on the monitor works but only shows a grey screen and the arcade pcb is lit so I know it is getting power to the pcb. Also when you try to coin it up you hear nothing. Any ideas of what I should check on this board? Could the battery on the board have died?I don't now to much about suicide batteries on pcbs. The person I bought it from said that the game worked but would start to go fuzzy and then one day it just stopped working. If it is the battery what can I do to get it working? If you have any suggestions to what could be the problem please throw them my way.
Thanks

Sweet! AB was the first modern 16-bit game I purchased on a console. I didn't realize it was an arcade title. I would love to get that cabinet.

Now that the envy is over, here's my two pence.

I found some information about what you're describing. (I'm disappointed to see Golden Axe on that list). If that's the fix, how do you pack a Z80 into that? The Z80's I have lying around are square with the same number of pins on each side. :dunno

Also, the problem you're describing with the monitor sounds like the same problem I have with one of my monitors. I asked a repair shop about it and they gave me this line of ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- about how there's a slow leak in the tube and the air is causing the gun to go out of focus. Told me to dump it and tried to sell me another for about $500 (this was about 15 years ago). That said, do you have any way to test the monitor separate from the PCB so you can isolate the problem properly? I'd attack it by separating the two and testing them, but I'd like to see how the more experienced people here on the boards would attack it.

Thanks for the response. :) I will try to post a pic up tomorrow if I get a chance. I don't think the monitor is a problem, I have done some work on them so what the repair shop told you I don't buy and like you I think they were just trying to sell you a new monitor. I looked at some info on the sega suicide batteries after I posted my first question and i don't think my board has a suicide battery on it( i am hoping it doesn't). The IC on my board is a motorola and looks just like a regualr IC but much larger. Also the website you passed on said sega started using suicide batteries in 1987 and my pcb board has 1986 written on it so. I also have a golden axe so I might try to put the golden axe board into the altered beast cabinet and see what happens. I will keep you posted and there are anymore suggestions out there I would love to hear them.
Thanks

Have ya checked the power supply for both +5v and +12v ?
Any service switches on the cabinet?

Just curious.

Did you try Golden Axe in it? That would definitely be an easier way to troubleshoot things (as long as you know the GA board works OK).

Before you do that though, have you checked the 12V & 5V lines to make sure the power supply's not screwy?
Brevity is not my strong suit.

Hi, I did try golden Axe in it and it does work so I know it is not a power supply problem but something wrong with the pcb, I just can't figure out what.
