Oh please someone help me here (FIXED mostly)
« on: February 17, 2007, 12:55:06 am »
So when I first started this project I got all excited and went out and bought off ebay a video card that was AGP. And of course not knowing anything at the time my computer can only support PCI.

So next I buy a VGA to S-video adaptor that I have been informed will just blow up my TV.

So now I buy a ATI 3D Rage II+ PCI card and install it and the damn thing has some type of error. And of course the guy doesn't include the install disc with the card that ATI no longer supports!

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I 've been searching where to get an updated driver hoping that will fix my problem but I can't find the darned thing. I am not even sure this will fix my problem.

This damned Video card is the last peice of my puzzle here so I'm getting a bit frustrated.

WHOO... Ok I feel better now. Any Advice please?

Save yourself some hassle and go get an ATI All In Wonder.

:applaud: Agree - or at least get a different video card, that is supported and has svideo out.

Your computer only supports PCI...how old is it?  I suppose this is a pretty obvious question, but are you sure the motherboard doesn't have on-board video with a connector that you can hook your monitor into?  Do you see any other devices under Display Adapters in Device Manager?

What operating system are you using? Here is a driver that says it works with most ATI cards and with most Operating Systems. Give it a try. If it doesn't work post the OS you are using.

Ok, let me answer all of these questions....

1. My computer does have on board video, but no s-video out so it does me no good, that is why i purchased a new card. I want to hook the card to a TV not a monitor, the TV is in my cab.

2. My new video card does support both s-video and RCA out. I would rather not buy ANOTHER video card unless this one wont work.

3. My computer is only 2 years old. It is a 2.88 GHZ with 700+ Ram.

4. I am running Windows XP. When I plug the card in it recongizes it and says found Video card (VGA) and then prepares to install but prompts me that there was a problem with the card and it may n ot function properly. It even recognizes the exact model of the card so I know it sees it. When I unplug my monitor from the default video card the screen pops up the power saver mode. When I plug the monitor into the new one the screen saver goes off like it is preparing to show a display but just stays black.

5. POLARIS - Here is the link to why it is a bad idea for the adaptor:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=63034.0

6. I will try that driver when I get home today. Would you think that is the problem in this instance?

Thank you everyone for trying to help!

I have to ask.
what service pack do you have? There is a reason I ask.

I remember the thread about your first card and blowing out a TV was at risk.

I was lucky and never had these problems. but with XP Pro no service pack
My card was limited on things that worked.

service pack 1
all works great. ( all 3 of my cards are ATI Radions) 2 agp slot
and 1 pci slot
64 meg cards
service pack 2 and with updates check every time I log on the web.
I am now having a problem with ati shut down at restart or turn off PC

all my game systems I have switched back to sevice pack 1 and these PC are not hooked to the web.

I am at work now but I am almost certain it is service pack 2. So if I roll this back that may help?

not sure if windows can be rolled back.
I have them all on disks.
I am one of those people who reinstall windowsobout every 6 to 8 months on my internet PC

Eesh... you should look into imaging your box once you get a good base install.  You can then restore your machine in under 10 minutes.

Try here for a good ATI driver for that card:

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=176383

Or, if you like, here:

http://www.driversearch.com/cgi/advsearch.cgi?q=RAGE+LT+PRO&m=any&ps=20&np=1

Be sure to delete/remove any of the old drivers for it that you tried first. . .

I was able to verify that I have attempted to use both those drivers and neither one worked. Exact same problem both times.

Have you uninstalled all of the previous drivers?  That's always something to do.

I did not uninstall the previous ones. I will try that when I get home tonight. I have 3 different ones now. So I should install one, if that doesn't work uninstall it and install number 2? and so on? Sorry. For some reason I thought it would just copy over.

Sorry, my noob is showing

Most of the time, it does not cause major issues to simply install one driver over another.  But, because of the problems you are having, it's probably the next step in trying to get this to work.

Since you have on-board video, have you disabled it via the BIOS?  And as a general question, why hasn't anyone else suggested it?

I have tried all three drivers and all have the same error.

So i uninstall and when I go to add hardware it prompts that it has found a new video card (vga) Next it idetifies the card as an ATI 3D rage II+ PCI then the screen goes blank for 5 seconds then it comes back on and says there was a problem during the installation and the device may not work properly.

So what next?

I have had 2 cards at the same time, Once
My mother board would not see the PCI slot one . I do not know why.
I put the agp one in and it saw it. ( no on board video)
I then installed the PCI and loaded the driver
It saw the agp and pci. I then took out the agp.
I needed the agp card for another PC becouse it has 2 VGA out puts and a svid out.

do you have another PC to try the cards in?
have you tried moving to another PCI slot?

to get to the bios.
Most my PC are hit F8 at boot up
or some say hit delete to enter setup
find your on board video and turn it off.
F10 = save and exit

if all is good on the card you should be fine.

XP really sould not be giving you problems on your card.
I am starting to think there is something wrong with the card.

XP Pro service pack 1 is not a hard disk to track down.

OK, I made some progres.

I went into the Bios and set the video to boot from the PCI. Now I can see everything on my desktop except the explorer bar at the bottom.

Also I am starting to think perhaps this card was a bad idea anyway. For what ever reason Mame plays slower than hell and has a terrible aspect ratio. Tried adjusting the settings on the card and Mame but neither seems to have an effect. Pac man is not playable. Once again this is a 2.88 ghz comp with 700+ ram.

On an earlier thread I asked if a cheap card made that big of a difference than a more expensive card and I got a more than likely no difference. Am i missing some adjustment here or do I need to get a better video card?

hope its of use to you

I have the drivers for that card and it will work in 2000.  PM me and I will dump the install exe from the disc that came with my rage.  Is it a 4mb version?
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.
