Video of an Arcade cabinet going against a handheld mame box!
« on: February 16, 2007, 10:23:43 pm »
I'm relatively new to the cabinet "scene" and have been reading this and other forums for retro gaming.  I came across this neat video comparing an arcade cabinet and a handheld.   Cheers!

Heh, well he did give the "profitability" contest to the cabinet.    :applaud:

Thanks for the video.

To me there is no comparison - a cabinet wins hands down. Especially in the controls category. Not to mention: Sound, screen size, being able to play 2 players at once, etc.

The only thing the handheld has is it's portable. Great - I got a portable with inferior controls, a tiny screen and piss poor sound - thats just swell.

So the GP2X plays Dreamcast and Saturn games?  Oh wait, compatibility was only based on Genesis and NES games...

Man, seeing the difference in comments is really just fascinating...You go on a GP2X board, they call the GP2X the clear winner. You come here, portability is worthless.

Fascinating.

Actually, I would really like to have one. It would be sweet to have all of that on a portable. There is nothing like playing arcade games on actual cab, though. That is kinda what this site is all about.

If you are looking for portability, GP2X wins....obviously. There is really no comparison to an actual cab, though.

What OS was he booting on?!?!? My tinyxp takes only 10 seconds or so (on a 400mhz PC!).

The cool thing about the gp2x though is that you can buy the $50.00 breakout board. Then you can put a GP2x in your cabinet.  ;D

Maybe we should make a video of someone chucking a GP2X at a cabinet...then we'll see who's the winner.  ;)

That's just a retarded comparison. Looks like some kind of gen Y or whatever propaganda. Like this site I came across of some young schmep who was exclaming why things, especially fighting games, were SO MUCH COOLER NOW. They're just not the same thing

Heh, I don't know the video was meant to be taken as a serious consumer reports style comparison.  It's effectiveily comparing a desktop machine to a pda...

Although watching some of the other gp2x videos, I'm pretty impressed with how nice it actually runs MAME.

The GP2x impressed me as well, but I've broken many handheld systems aand controlers. I don't know if its an anger issue or durability issue, but i've never broken arcade controls. Heck, the're ment to be molested!

Heh.  Don't take this video seriously.  I'm sure it wasn't meant that way.

This is obviously just someone who is a fan of both, and is really impressed at how well this little handheld stacks up to bigger machines.

The GP2X is an absolutely amazing little gizmo.  It plays a lot of games better than you would expect it to, the screen is better than any other handheld, except for maybe the PSP, and the fact that 2gb cards are getting so cheap means that you can carry around a lot of stuff to play with.

Drawbacks:  The stick leaves much to be desired. It's usable, but I'm baffled that they couldn't have done better.  The speakers are "tinny" sounding, and the "fake 3D" sound processing kind of makes it worse.  Other than that, it's a really neat toy.

Oh, and they have a docking unit on the way, the "consumer" version of the developer "breakout" board, that has TV out and 4 USB connections, plus other stuff.  Might be a great foundation for a mini-mame cab, or "all in 1" control panel!!!

Lew- Didn't you once build a handheld? I could have swore i had seen something about one over in the "projects" forum.

i have a gp2x and im very happy with it for what it is. the sound is dissapointing i must say, but you never seem to be able to have EVERYTHING in one system  :(  from what ive seen of the psp, the gp2x screen is second only to sonys machine.

The PSP screen is great for slow games/3D games and photos, as it's sharp, but it ghosts like all hell, so it's not so great for 2D.

Example: You ever play Deception 3 for the PSX? I converted it to play on my PSP. You know how text will scroll along the bottom of the screen in parts of the menu? It's completely unreadable on the PSP.

That's not to say the PSP is worthless either. If you want the commercial games on it, it's a great system, as these work around and with its limitations quite well. But as a homebrew machine, it is somewhat flawed. A shame.

Then I need to modify what I said earlier;

The GP2X has the best screen of any handheld available.  It's very bright, has good viewing angles and I have not seen any blurring or anything that would indicate a slow screen update.

Certainly a nice screen, and a great little console. Just wish I could get NeoGeo games that require the gfx dump to not have those momentary slowdowns when it has to load new data...I think I might need a faster SD card.

How have I NOT HEARD about this little goody before?!?

Hmm. . . methinks the GBA-SP with the Flash Card will be on eBay soon!

And what of this little item - feedback from anyone here who owns one?  Same thing in a different package in true Korean fashion???

EDIT:  Hmm. . . that's not a Linux system, tho.  Palm OS.  :P

So, back to the GP2X.  Why buy a PSP instead of this, besides not being able to play the PSP games (which I could care less about)?

PSP has more raw power, plus the haxxorz have taken over Sony's PS1 emulation, so if you like original playstation games, you can play the majority of them fullspeed on the PSP(it's either fullspeed, glitchy, or doesn't work. Vast majority of them are just fully working.).

Of course, you then have the screen issue and lack of tv-out to deal with, so it's really up to you.
