XBOX, MAME and KeyWiz
« on: February 14, 2007, 04:52:51 pm »
Morning,

need to advice.... am looking at doing an XBOX Media Centre... I know there is an XBOX MAME port, but is it any good when compared to the PC one?  Do the games run the same or are there differences?

The next part is I have a Control Panel with a KeyWiz (PS2), 2 joys, 20 buttons or so..... can I create an adaptor that will allow me to plug this into the XBOX to use for my old arcade games for the genuine experience?

Thanks

Nick

If I remember mameox128 worked the best, had the best light gun support. Played most games pretty well. I just hacked an old controller for my cp, got the job done.

Regarding the Control panel, I have an existing one that I plug into my PC using a PS2 port.  it works perfectly and use it a lot with the PC MAME.

All I was looking for is a convertor say with the PS2 female plug on one side, going to one (or more) xbox plugs to plug into the Xbox unit.

Thanks

Nick

So even though my control panel has a KeyWiz inside, the XBA only needs a PS2 input?

THANKS FOR THAT!

Nick.

Ultimarcs adapter works well as does MAMEox, Mamedox or Mameox128

Got your PM, but thought I would mention it here.

There are a number of PS/2 (Keyboard and Mouse) to XBOX converters out there.  They go by the names of "SmartJoy Frag", "Max Shooter" and so on.  They have different plastic cases, but appear to be nearly identical in operation.

They are programmable, so you can can set up multiple configurations in the device that match how you want your panel controls to be mapped, but you'll need to do this first with a keyboard and save it to the converter.  Then you can plug in your KeyWiz and it should work fine, based on tests I have done in the past.

There are a couple of drawbacks with these types of adapters, though.  You will need to "activate" your profile by pressing a button on your panel that is mapped to the F key you stored it in when you first power up (not a big deal), and you can only use one controller input on the XBOX.  For a media center application or single player games, that's probably going to be fine.  But it won't help for 2 players.
