Best place to get LED buttons?
« on: February 13, 2007, 10:04:35 pm »
I see them at GroovyGameGear
here
and this, too:
RGB-Drive™ Pushbutton Lighting module

But I don't know if I need anything else.  I want to get three dif't colors of LED buttons, but I only see 2 on his site.  At least that's what I'm assuming these are:

Zippy™ (+$0.54)
Cherry™ (+$0.74)

1) Is there a better place to get them?
2) Is there any place that has 3 dif't colors?
3) What else do I need to buy?

I have a working cab w/ ggg's KeyWiz.  Thanks.

Zippy and cherry are the microswitches, not the color of the button.

The Electric Ice buttons themselves are white until lit up.

There are such things as colored translucent buttons, ponyboy and divemaster carry those. They also carry a clear translucent button which you can use your RGB LEDs with.

If you want a plug and play solution, I recommend getting the Electric Ice buttons and (more importantly) the RGB-Drive modules and cables.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

Zippy and Cherry are manufacturers of microswitches, they have nothing to do with color.

All of the GGG buttons are that milky white color, there are no other colors for the Electric Ice buttons.  If you get the RGB drives with RGB leds, you can make the buttons light up to any color you want.  For your questions...

1)  There is no "better" place to get them since Randy is the one who created them.  If you want Electric Ice buttons you go to GGG heh.  You could get the translucent colored buttons from Happ though, which are colored already (but obviously can't change color like the GGG ones).  Ponyboy and Divemaster can get the Happ buttons as well.

2) again, GGG buttons can be any color you want depending on what LED you put on it.  They will all be milky white with no LED though.  Happ buttons are colored already, but you can only really put in the corresponding color LED for good results, ie blue LED in blue button.

3) The button and some LED source is all you need, besides whatever wires you'll need to connect everything.  If you want to change colors though, you'll likely need an LED-Wiz from GGG.

EDIT:  budda seems to type a bit faster than I do.   :dizzy:

Thanks, guys.

So at minimum, I need X number of Electric Ice buttons and the RGB-Drive Pushbutton Lighting module.

What do you mean by "change colors"?  I was so totally wrong on the "cherry/zippy" thing, I'm afraid to take a stab at this one.  But it seems that, for an advanced project, the LED-Wiz will allow you to make the LED buttons do all kinds of crazy things (blink, change color, etc.)  Is that correct?

(Basically I'm thinking that if I don't understand what it is and what it does, then I have no business buying it)

Yup... you'll of course need X number of RGB-Drive Pushbuttom modules too... one for each button used.

Correct again.  With the LED Wiz and the RGB modules you could make the color any color you'd like by mixing the Red, Green, and Blue intensities.  You can keep them one color, shift them, blink them, etc etc.

If you didn't want to do anything that advanced, you could do the following with either the Electric Ice buttons or Happ Translucents:

Buy whatever color LED you'd like the button to be and hook them up.  Power them with your PC power supply or some other power source.  This would make it so your buttons would always be on when your cab is on, and always be the color of the LED installed in it (obviously).  The only difference really is that the Electric Ice buttons would be that milky white color when the power is off, while the Happ buttons would be whatever color they actually are.  Of course, it's been shown that the color of the LED is dispersed more evenly with the Electric Ice buttons, so it's really just your preference --  arguably "better" color but white buttons when the machine is off... or buttons that are always a given color, but that might create a "spotlight" effect through the top of the button.

Most of the clasic games had just white buttons any way. I decided on GGG Ice buttons. I also used red and blue translucent for my coin, 1&2 player, pause, and esc. buttons. I put blue LEDs behind all but 5 of the ICE and the other 5 I put RGB drives. This way if I am doing an asteroids or defender set up I can match the actual original button colors.
This is the beauty of multi colored buttons. Then when you get bored some day you can make some attract modes and make you lights do all sorts of crazy sh... eh hem... stuff.  When my cab turns on I have all LEDS come on and the 5 RGB just sit and pulse between blue and red this creates some very purples during the mid tones.

So
1. yes the GGG ICE is white untill lit, but originals were never lit and were always white (except for when they wern't)
2. ICE are MADE to take LED light so the color, or light, is sent smoothly through the button.
3. Randy visits this forum quite regularly and is excellent about his customer service.
4. When used with a front end like Atomic, or Mala, but you really should use Atomic IMHO, without having having to jump through a bunch of hoops, you can light each game as per what buttons are used. (red = fire, green = jump...)
